The "White Butte Fire" broke out yesterday afternoon on Fort Carson, starting near Range 143 around 1:45pm. Last reports said the fire spread to about 40 acres, with no containment at the time. Fort Carson Fire Department responded with four units, joined by mutual aid from Security, Monument, Colorado Springs fire departments, and the El Paso County Wildland Fire Team. Smoke from the fire may be visible in Colorado Springs, and local air quality could be impacted. Crews are working to bring the fire under control as the situation develops.

“Fast fashion” has led to an explosion of cheaply made garments, driven by an ever-shifting tide of trends. Why should you care? Because the production of billions of new clothes every year comes at a human and environmental cost. Workers are often underpaid and overworked to meet the demand for mass-produced fashion, while synthetic materials like polyester and nylon harm the planet.

Slow fashion stylist Jo Peppin encourages consumers to reconsider their shopping habits by embracing secondhand purchases, supporting local businesses, and using apps like "Good on You" to verify a brand's ethical standards. She stresses that shifting to sustainable fashion is about progress, not perfection—small, mindful changes can make a big difference in reducing fast fashion’s grip on the industry. Full Story

🗣️ Residents Demand Solutions At Town Hall

homeless camps

During last night’s town hall in Colorado Springs, the issue of homeless encampments took center stage, with residents voicing concerns about what they see as a lack of adequate action. City officials explained that changes in state laws and court rulings prevent law enforcement from jailing individuals for camping illegally. Instead, the city's "low tolerance" policy emphasizes education over punishment.

The CSPD's Homeless Outreach Team (HOT) works across the city to identify and manage encampments, but some residents fear these efforts may not be enough to address the growing issue. City leaders encouraged voters to support candidates who advocate for stronger enforcement if they want more decisive action on homelessness. Full Story

🚨 WARNING: Skimmer Scams Expanding in the Springs

Credit Card Skimmer Install

CSPD is warning residents about a growing trend in credit card skimming incidents. Once limited to gas station pumps, these devices are now being found at grocery stores, large retailers, and restaurants, where criminals use them to capture card information from unsuspecting customers. Skimmers, which can be installed in seconds and are hard to detect, allow criminals to make unauthorized transactions or drain bank accounts.

Be vigilant when using card readers at self-checkout kiosks, gas pumps, and ATMs. Check for signs of tampering and report any suspicious activity immediately. CSPD also recommends using contactless payment methods, like mobile wallets or tap-to-pay, which eliminate the risk of physically inserting a card into a compromised reader. Also monitor financial statements for unauthorized transactions.

Cottonwood Creek Trail

This weekend is going to be warm and sunny so it’s a good time to go explore the Cottonwood Creek Trail. This 6-mile route connecting northern Colorado Springs with the Pikes Peak Greenway, offers smooth concrete paths and access to key parks like Cottonwood Creek Community Park and the YMCA. A dirt trail alternative provides a 3-mile loop, and future plans include extending the trail northeast to connect with Sand Creek Trail near Black Forest. While the trail is well-maintained, some crossings, such as Dublin Blvd, currently lack pedestrian-friendly features.
