🚧 Major Traffic Disruptions: What You Need to Know
This week, significant closures and lane shifts will affect drivers along S Academy as part of a major safety improvement project. Full closure of the on-ramp from Coventry Dr to westbound S Academy for scheduled to end this Fri, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m.
A detour is in place:
Traffic using Coventry Dr to enter westbound S Academy will travel north on Maxwell St, turn east onto the CanAm Hwy, and continue southeast to enter S Academy.
Overnight alternating lane closures on northbound S Academy between Fountain Creek and Bradley Rd are planned to allow crews to perform bridge deck repairs.
Tues, Oct 8 through Thurs, Oct. 10, 7pm to 4:30am
Fri, Oct 11 at 7pm to Sat, Oct 12 at 7pm
Later this week:
The El Paso Street Bridge is scheduled for demolition after suffering irreparable damage from a truck collision in 2021. The removal process begins Oct 12, with road closures around Platte and detours directing traffic to Boulder and Pikes Peak. City officials deemed the bridge too dangerous due to falling debris and structural deterioration. While the settlement from the crash will fund the demolition, no replacement bridge is planned, raising questions from residents about the future of the area. The project is expected to take at least three days, and while access to nearby homes will be maintained, drivers should anticipate significant traffic changes.

❌ A Break in Tradition: Parade Canceled
Update 10/9/24: The community saves the parade, click for update.
The annual Veteran’s Day Parade in Colorado Springs, scheduled for Nov 2, has been canceled for 2024, marking a break in the event’s 25-year history. The decision comes after the parade's organizers faced a lack of participation and sponsorship, a trend they’ve noticed since the pandemic. Increased costs for essential services, such as insurance and police support, also contributed to the cancellation, as organizers had long avoided charging participants fees to maintain the spirit of honoring veterans without financial burden.
Despite the disappointment, the board is planning a 2025 event to honor local veterans and expressed their appreciation to past sponsors, participants, and the city for their continued support.
🔥 Breaking News: House Engulfed in Early Morning Blaze
Fire crews were dispatched to a house fire near Chelton and Darkwood Pl in southeast Colorado Springs. The fire, which started around 4am this morning, quickly spread through the home, filling the neighborhood with smoke. Firefighters are on the scene, working to extinguish the flames and prevent further damage. The location, just west of Chelton and S Academy, remains a hub of activity as crews continue their efforts. This is a developing story.
