🎗️ Community’s Act of Kindness for a Local Boy
When 7-year-old Christopher, who is undergoing chemotherapy for Stage 4 cancer, couldn’t attend his school’s pumpkin patch trip, his grandmother asked a local Facebook group for affordable pumpkin suggestions. To her surprise, the Colorado Springs community came together, donating dozens of pumpkins, decorations, and gifts, transforming their yard into a personal pumpkin patch. Diagnosed with Wilms' tumor earlier this year, Christopher has faced intense treatment, making outings difficult, but this gesture allowed him to experience some joy close to home. In response to the generosity, his family is now giving away some of the donated pumpkins to others in need.
💰 Mayor Unveils Balanced Budget for 2025
Mayor Yemi presented a balanced budget for Colorado Springs for 2025 yesterday, emphasizing public safety, city cleanup, and homelessness. The proposed General Fund budget of $440 million marks a 2.7% increase from the previous year, with sales tax revenue expected to rise by 3.5%. However, these increases won't fully cover rising costs, prompting the mayor to continue last year's budget reductions and utilize $6.5 million from reserve funds, while maintaining a healthy reserve balance of 17%. The budget includes hiring 20 new police officers, adding civilian staff for various operational needs, and funding programs addressing homelessness, all while capping property tax rates to ease the financial burden on residents.
🐘 CMZoo Future in CO Supreme Court
Colorado Supreme Court is preparing to hear a case that could reshape the legal treatment of animals in captivity, on Oct 24. The Nonhuman Rights Project (NhRP) has filed a lawsuit arguing that the elephants at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo are suffering due to their confinement in enclosures far smaller than their natural range. The group seeks to relocate the elephants to a sanctuary.
The zoo disputes these claims, asserting that it provides top-level care and is highly accredited. The case, which was previously dismissed by a lower court, will now be heard by the state's highest court. If the court rules in favor of the NhRP, it could set a landmark precedent for animal rights and change CMZoo as we know it.
🧛♀️Trivia: The Unexpected Journey From Ivywild to Hollywood
Do you remember the sultry, wise-cracking Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, who dominated pop culture in the 1980s? Before she became a horror icon, Cassandra Peterson, the woman behind Elvira, was just another Colorado Springs teenager with big dreams. She attended Ivywild Elementary and later graduated from Palmer High School in the early 1960s, where her flair for the dramatic first took root.
Raised in a family deeply involved with costumes, thanks to her aunts’ costume shop, Peterson's Partyland, on S Tejon in the historic Ivywild neighborhood. Cassandra was no stranger to dressing up and embracing bold characters. After high school, she followed her dreams to Las Vegas to become a showgirl—a winding and bumpy journey that would eventually lead her toward her famous persona, Elvira. *Source
🎭 Early on, which famous celebrity did Cassandra Peterson (Elvira) go on a date with, who gave her career-changing advice that led her to leave Las Vegas and pursue new opportunities? |
