⛏️ Tragic Turn at Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine
Twelve tourists trapped 1,000 feet underground in the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine in Cripple Creek were rescued late last night after an elevator malfunction, an incident that quickly made national headlines. The accident, which occurred during a routine tour, led to the death of one person and injuries to four others. Crews initially considered sending a rescue team down the mine shaft but were able to restore the elevator and safely extract the group. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released, and the cause of the malfunction is still under investigation.
This marks the first major accident at the mine since 1986, raising fresh concerns about the mine's structural stability and safety protocols. The mine, a popular tourist attraction, has long been a showcase of Colorado’s mining heritage in Teller County.
🔥 Wildfire Danger Spurs Citywide Ban
In response to dry conditions and an unfavorable weather forecast, Colorado Springs is implementing burn restrictions starting at noon today, Oct 11. These restrictions, ordered by Fire Marshal Brett Lacey, ban all open fires in undeveloped areas, recreational fires, bonfires, and fireworks. Additionally, smoking in city parks and open spaces is prohibited, as is the use of small engines without spark arrestors. The aim is to reduce the risk of wildfires fueled by dry vegetation and wind. For more information visit coswildfireready.org.
💼 New Jobs Boost Colorado Springs’ Economy
WMD Squared Engineering, an innovative design and drafting firm, has chosen Colorado Springs for its latest expansion. The company will create 42 new jobs, focusing on the medical, energy, and aerospace sectors. With contracts secured from the US Coast Guard and US Navy, WMD Squared’s new office at Catalyst Campus at 555 E Pikes Peak Ave, marks a significant addition to our local booming defense and tech industries. The Colorado Economic Development Commission approved nearly $300,000 in tax incentives to support job creation, while state and local partners, including the Colorado Springs Chamber & EDC, played a vital role in facilitating the move.
