🚧 Your Morning Commute Just Got Tricky

I-25 & Woodmen Traffic Cam 4am 12/10/24

The morning starts off icy and cold across Colorado Springs following an overnight drop into the teens. Roads remain slick, so if you’re driving, be prepared for a slower commute. Fortunately, as the sun comes out, road temperatures are expected to climb above freezing by late morning, helping to improve conditions.

Tuesday’s forecast promises more sunshine but also gusty winds reaching up to 30 mph at times. With highs in the 30s, it’s a day for layers—and caution if you’re venturing out.

Closures and delayed starts are already being posted. Click to check for any weather-related closures or delays before making plans.

🏙️ More Apartments or Blocked Views? City Council Decides

ONE VeLa KOAA video

A vote by the City Council today could pave the way for ONE VeLa, a proposed 27-story apartment tower poised to become the tallest building in Colorado Springs. Planned for Costilla and Sahwatch, east of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Museum, the structure would stand 300 feet tall, overtaking the Wells Fargo Tower by more than 50 feet.

Originally introduced as a 36-story building, the project faced criticism from residents worried about the impact on mountain views. After adjustments, the current design is moving through the approval process, with additional steps expected to take place in early 2025 if the council gives the green light. Public meeting is scheduled for 9am (if it’s not delayed) and usually is broadcast live on the city council’s Facebook page.

🍔 Last Call at Munchies: See What’s Happening

Munchies Closing

Colorado Springs is saying goodbye to another cherished downtown venue. After five years of delicious food, lively events, and community connection, Munchies at 122 North Tejon will serve its last customers on December 31st. From its start as a food truck in 2019 to its current role as a downtown favorite, Munchies has weathered challenges like rising costs and the pandemic but has always kept the spirit of joy and togetherness alive.

As they prepare to close, owners Chuck and MaryAnn are inviting everyone to join them for a series of events celebrating the journey, including trivia nights, bingo, live music, and an unforgettable New Year’s Eve goodbye party. This isn’t just a farewell—it’s a chance to reflect on the memories made and raise a glass to what’s next.

🧐 TRIVIA: The Ranch Secret Behind Our Newest Trail

Did You Know? 🌲 The Pineries Open Space, near Volmer and Shoup Roads, now a beloved public recreation area, was once part of a massive 16,000-acre ranch owned by the Farrar family. In the 1960s, the Farrars struck a unique deal with an electric utility company: instead of selling land for power lines, they granted an easement on the condition it followed the ranch’s southern and eastern boundaries. This cleared path was later used to grow and sell transplant trees, funding efforts to control pine beetles and protect the forest. Today, the area is preserved for its natural beauty and wildlife thanks to conservation easements placed decades ago!

🌳 The journey to becoming a public space wasn’t easy. The Pineries Open Space was severely damaged by the 2013 Black Forest Fire, delaying its opening for to the public. After 7 years of restoration and planning, the area was finally opened to the public in June 2020, offering 8.5 miles of trails and countless opportunities to connect with nature.
