🚗 Expect Crowds, Delays & More Patrols

As holiday weekend kicks off, Colorado Springs is preparing for large crowds, heavier traffic, and safety risks, especially with the return of Territory Days in Old Colorado City.
The holiday marks the start of the “100 Deadliest Days of Summer,” when traffic deaths typically rise across the state. State troopers are stepping up enforcement, focusing on speeding, impaired driving, and road rage. Locals and visitors are encouraged to plan ahead, stay sober if driving, and use rideshare options to stay safe. Full Story

🍽️ Closed for Mold?! A Downtown First

Not every restaurant passed with flying colors this week—and one downtown actually got shut down! Here’s a quick look at who’s struggling and who’s shining when it comes to health inspections:
The Block Bar & Grill on Tejon was shut down after inspectors found mold in the cooler, expired food, no handwashing sink, and flies coming in through an open back door. A sign said “closed for maintenance,” but no re-inspection yet.
Mamitas near Powers & S Carefree racked up 18 violations—its third failed inspection in a year. Problems included food safety issues, improper storage, and pest concerns. Still waiting for a recheck.
L&L Hawaiian BBQ at Powers & Barnes failed with 10 violations, including sanitation problems and poor glove use. It’s an improvement from last time, but still not passing.
Thankfully, some spots are setting the bar high:
Skirted Heifer at Powers & Dublin and Rocks 24 Pizzeria on Fountain both earned perfect scores.
Bunzy’s and Booze near the Olympic Training Center also scored high, They offer fresh, homemade food and a strong commitment to supporting other local small businesses.
It’s a good reminder—when you choose local, it matters who’s keeping things clean behind the scenes.
Health inspection results across El Paso County are available online for those wanting to check their favorite spots. Full Story

🍫 Rocky Road Chocolate Sheet Cake

Recipe by I Heart eating
Confession…we are going to make this cake this weekend. It’s not a “healthy” version, it’s the full, from scratch cake with regular sugar, etc. And yet, it looked so good we’re going to try it. It’s also good for pot luck and BBQ’s. 😋
Rocky Road Sheet Cake is a moist, homemade chocolate cake topped with melty marshmallows, rich chocolate frosting, and chopped almonds!

🥾 Rainbow Falls Reopens Today! 🌈

Rainbow Falls Historic Site is reopening today, May 23, for the summer season—and while the hike is short, the payoff is big. With misty waterfalls, colorful graffiti-covered rocks, and a tucked-away creekside trail, this spot offers a unique blend of nature and local flair you won’t find on every trail.
The falls are open Fridays through Sundays from 9am - 4 pm, with a $20 per-car fee that includes off-site parking and continuous shuttle rides. It’s a temporary setup after past rockfalls closed the main lot, but worth the detour if you’re craving a quick outdoor escape close to town.
Today and Sat should be your best bet weather-wise—Sunday’s looking soggy, so plan ahead.
Location: 101 Higginbotham Road, Manitou Springs
