🏡 Did This Vote Just Cost Us Millions?

Colorado Springs City Council has voted to oppose Governor Polis’ executive order that ties affordable housing funds to compliance with several new state housing laws. The city argues the mandates conflict with local planning efforts and could strain infrastructure, while the state says these reforms are crucial to solving Colorado’s housing crisis.
This decision could lead to the city being labeled “non-compliant,” which may reduce its chances of receiving competitive state grants for housing and infrastructure projects. The final compliance list is expected by October 2025. Full Story

🚮 Clean-Up Day Tomorrow at Midland Trail

Tomorrow, May 31, volunteers from across Colorado Springs will gather at Vermijo Park for a community clean-up of the historic Midland Trail, part of the “Keep It Clean COS” initiative. The event runs from 9am to noon and is open to anyone who wants to lend a hand.
The trail, once home to the Colorado Midland Railroad, is now a beloved connector for walkers, cyclists, and neighbors alike. This clean-up, organized by TOSC, Earthwise Waste Solutions, and the City, offers a chance to care for the places that connect us—and to spend a few hours doing something good, together.
🐜 Tick Talk: What to Know Now

Tick season has arrived in Colorado, with the Rocky Mountain wood tick and American dog tick being the most common local culprits. While ticks can carry illnesses like Colorado Tick Fever and Lyme disease, you can protect yourself with simple steps like wearing long sleeves and light-colored clothing, using repellents, checking your body after time outside, and drying clothes on high heat.
If you find a tick, remove it quickly with tweezers. Grasp the tick as close to your body as possible, then quickly pull it straight out. You want to be sure to pull out the tick’s full body, including the head. This can be tricky because ticks dig their heads into our bodies to feed. They also clamp their feet into their hosts. Avoid home remedies like burning or petroleum jelly. Click for detailed information.
And if you feel flu-like symptoms after a hike, don’t hesitate to see your doctor. With a little care, you can enjoy the outdoors safely.

🍨 Strawberry-Chocolate Ice Cream

Recipe by Forks Over Knives
This strawberry-chocolate nice cream (plant-based ice cream made with frozen bananas) is as pretty as it is delicious. Dark chocolate chunks make the healthy dessert taste especially decadent.

🥾 Worth the Hike: St. Mary’s Falls
Recommended hike by our friend Heath, of the Colorado Fan Club…St. Mary’s Falls is a moderately challenging 6.2-mile out-and-back hike in North Cheyenne Cañon that rewards hikers with a peaceful waterfall tucked in the forest.
Starting near Helen Hunt Falls on Lower Gold Camp Road, the trail climbs about 1,200 feet and takes around 3–4 hours, depending on your pace. Along the way, you’ll pass a scenic old tunnel and follow a creek to the falls. It’s dog-friendly, best enjoyed in late spring through fall, and a great pick for locals or visitors wanting a nature escape without leaving the city.
Location: 3440 N Cheyenne Canon Rd, COS 80906
