🔍 Tracing Roots in COS

Amy Miller, who manages the McAllister House Museum, recently discovered surprising and difficult truths about her family while working with the African American Museum of Colorado Springs and taking a genealogy class. Her ancestors included enslavers, a reality that deeply impacted her understanding of local and national history. Through this emotional journey, she gained insight into her own privilege and now hopes others will feel empowered to learn their personal histories. Full Story

😱 Local Restaurant Banished

After numerous failed inspections and health complaints—including reports of unsanitary conditions and customers getting sick—Viet’s Restaurant on N Academy, has permanently lost its food license. The closure, finalized in early June, marks the first time El Paso County has taken such strong action.
Other restaurants like Grand Gyros, also on N Academy, had the lowest health inspection score last week, with 14 violations noted.
But there’s good news too—many beloved local eateries received top marks, including Uwe’s German Restaurant, Bonny and Read, Treehouse Cafe and Drive-In Tasty Freeze.
Health inspection results across El Paso County are available online for those wanting to check their favorite spots. Full Story

🥾 This Hidden Trail Connects the City

Templeton Gap Trail
Stretching about four miles along the Templeton Gap Floodway, this mostly paved trail connects key green spaces like Goose Gossage Sports Complex, Palmer Park, and Union Meadows Open Space. It gently rolls through the city with some moderate hills and a few road crossings, making it great for walkers and cyclists alike. The trail links to the Pikes Peak Greenway and other nearby paths, creating a larger network for outdoor fun.
Whether you're out for fresh air, fitness, or a scenic shortcut, Templeton Gap Trail has something to offer—and more improvements may be coming with future park plans.

Location: Get the trail at Gossage Youth Sports Complex, 3950 Mark Dabling Blvd, COS, CO 80907
