😲 Surprise Visitor at PPLD

An adventurous hawk caused a bit of a stir at the Pikes Peak Library District’s programming building yesterday, swooping inside The Hall behind Penrose Library after a few days of peering in from the outside. The bird explored ceiling fans, light fixtures, and even a stack of books before flying back out safely. Staff welcomed the visit with humor and a sense of wonder, sharing the unexpected moment on social media. While the hawk is gone, its visit was a charming break and a great kickoff to the library’s summer programming season.

🎆 Can You Legally Light Fireworks Here?

With the Fourth of July a week away, excitement is building—especially for those looking forward to fireworks lighting up the night sky. But in Colorado Springs, the rules on fireworks can be a bit tricky, depending on exactly where you live.
Inside Colorado Springs city limits, all personal fireworks are banned. But just outside, in El Paso County, certain types—like sparklers, fountains, and smoke bombs—are allowed. That means many folks living near the edge of town, like in Security or Fountain, often celebrate with neighborhood displays that rival small-town shows.
Weather also plays a big role in how celebrations unfold. Thanks to recent rain, fire risks are lower this year, but locals still remain cautious. But both shoppers and retailers know to keep an eye on any late fire bans. Full Story

🍽️ Which Local Restaurants Missed the Mark?

Two local restaurants, including the Texas Roadhouse on 8th St and Q Rico Taco at the Citadel Mall, failed recent health inspections and are awaiting re-inspections after being cited for multiple issues like improper food handling and temperature control. Both say they’re taking active steps to address the problems.
Meanwhile, several local favorites received top marks, including many chain restaurants. However, the highlight was The Local Table in Security-Widefield. The owner’s focus on quality, teamwork, and attention to detail—right down to fresh flowers on every table—is helping create not just safe dining, but memorable meals too.
Health inspection results across El Paso County are available online for those wanting to check their favorite spots. Full Story

🍡 Patriotic Fruit Pops
These no-sugar-added vegan ice pops harness the power of fruit for a sweet summer treat that’s truly refreshing. Note: recipe calls for craft sticks and ice pop molds, so have those ready. If you don’t have ice pop molds, use small paper cups instead.
