🔥 Could AI Help You Escape a Wildfire?

Could AI Help You Escape a Wildfire?

Colorado Springs has become the first region in Colorado to adopt AI-powered evacuation planning through software developed by Ladris. This tool uses data like weather, traffic, population, and terrain to simulate natural disasters and plan escape routes in real time. More than 50 local agencies have been trained, with the goal of avoiding past evacuation issues like those seen during the Waldo Canyon Fire.

Supported by a state grant, the initiative is part of a nine-month planning process designed to help first responders better predict and manage disaster response across the Pikes Peak Region. *Full Story

💰 Mayor vs. Council: City Tax Showdown Over 2B Funds

Mayor vs. Council: City Tax Showdown Over 2B Funds

Colorado Springs City Council is pushing back after Mayor Yemi vetoed an ordinance outlining how recreational pot tax revenue should be spent. The ordinance, which had passed with a 6–3 supermajority, directs funds toward public safety, mental health services, and PTSD treatment for veterans—just as laid out in the 2021 voter-approved Ballot Measure 2B.

Council members argue the mayor’s concerns misrepresent the intent and content of the ordinance, which they say does not limit emergency powers or reduce flexibility. A second supermajority vote will be needed to override the veto in a future meeting.

🚧 Lane Closures: July 15–17, Powers Blvd Alert

Looking southwest over the new diverging diamond interchange under construction at Powers Boulevard and Airport Road

Nighttime drivers on Powers Blvd should plan for double-lane closures in both directions through Friday night between 7pm and 4am as crews remove temporary supports from the new Airport Road bridges. The project has reached a major milestone—bridge deck work is nearly complete, and crews are now transporting materials over Powers using the new bridges, improving traffic safety and construction efficiency.

⛏️ TRIVIA: Which Museum Digs Into Colorado Springs’ Gritty Past?

Did you know that Colorado Springs owes much of its early growth to the search for gold and silver in the nearby foothills, drawing dreamers and innovators who forever shaped the city’s energy and spirit?

The Western Museum of Mining & Industry brings this remarkable legacy to life with more than 4,000 artifacts spread across 27 acres. Founded in 1970 by passionate local historians and engineers inspired by the region’s wild mining past, the museum offers visitors a chance to see and hear enormous steam engines, try their hand at gold panning, and walk through recreated mine tunnels constructed by the Colorado School of Mines.

Which working machine can you watch in live demonstration at the Western Museum of Mining & Industry?

The museum also features live demonstrations, a library packed with thousands of rare mining texts, and videos with history, and outdoor activities. Whether you’re a lifelong local or a newcomer, there’s no better place to get hands-on with the gritty stories and inventions that helped build Colorado Springs into a city of progress and possibility.
