🍦 70 Years of Cones and Community

The Old North End’s beloved Tasty Freeze turned 70 this month, bringing neighbors together for a celebration filled with nostalgia, community, and cones for just 70 cents. Classic cars, live Elvis tunes, and smiling kids made the day feel like a slice of Americana.

The event also supported The Place, a local nonprofit for youth facing homelessness. If you missed the fun, don’t worry—Tasty Freeze will host another community event with car shows and live music on August 10. Have you been back to the Tasty Freeze? *Full Story

🎓 Backstage Pass to Courts, Cops & County Secrets

Ever wonder how your county actually works? The 2025 El Paso County Citizen College offers a rare, behind-the-scenes look into the heart of local government—from the DA’s office to snowplow operations.

Running Oct 13–18, this free week-long program is open to residents and county employees and includes facility tours, meet-and-greets with department leaders, and hands-on sessions on budgeting, land use, public safety, courts, and more. Participants wrap up with a graduation ceremony at Fountain Creek Nature Center. It’s a unique opportunity to learn, connect, and deepen your understanding of the services that shape daily life in El Paso County.

🚧 Nighttime I-25 Detour You Should Know

Just a quick reminder for those who drive late or early: northbound I-25 will be closed overnight tonight, from Santa Fe Ave to S Academy as part of CDOT’s final phase of the MAMSIP project.

The closure runs 8:30pm to 4:30am, so if you’re traveling during those hours, be ready to detour via US 85/87 and S Academy. This is the same project we reported on last week, focused on long-term improvements to safety, bridge replacements, and better traffic flow in this busy stretch between Fountain and Fort Carson.

🏰 TRIVIA: What Accident Changed Our City Founder Forever?

Did you know that General William Jackson Palmer, Colorado Springs’ founder, didn’t move straight into his iconic Glen Eyrie castle? In 1871, the first structure completed on his new estate was what we now call the Carriage House—a stable that became a temporary home for Palmer and his wife, Queen, even hosting tea parties with friends amid borrowed cutlery and ten-by-ten rooms above the horses.

How did General Palmer become partially paralyzed later in life in 1906?

Only after these “picnic days” did the Palmers move into a grander residence, eventually evolving into the 67-room castle known today. The Carriage House itself grew and changed, housing famous horses like Schoolboy and Donner, later serving as a tavern, tea room, and finally, after a dramatic rescue from neglect, as a beautifully restored part of the Glen Eyrie guest experience. Through it all, both buildings have been at the heart of stories of hardship, hospitality, and the near-miss fate of being carved into luxury villas in the early 1900s.

Answer: He was thrown from his horse at Glen Eyrie *Source1 *Source2
