🤝 Finding Purpose in Giving Back: The World of Hearts Story
🦋 How a Painful Ending Sparked a New Beginning
After three decades of mixing drinks and listening to customers' stories, Melissa (Mel) Gorsuch found herself at a crossroads when her body could no longer handle the physical demands of bartending.
She then found a new path in a direct sales business, a venture she cherished with her mother-in-law. After she passed away, the business became a treasured connection to her memory. So when the company unexpectedly closed in December 2024, the loss was devastating.
"I felt like I lost her all over again," Melissa shares, her voice softening. "She was a world traveler with a huge heart who gave everything to others."
This profound loss sparked the creation of World of Hearts LLC, a unique business with a mission unlike most. Melissa transformed her grief into purpose, creating a platform that champions local nonprofits that often go unnoticed.
"I'll never get rich doing this," she says with a warm smile, "but that was never the point."
What makes World of Hearts special is Melissa's hands-on approach. Rather than simply collecting donations, she asks nonprofits what they actually need—sometimes it's volunteers, sometimes it's connections to resources, sometimes it's simply visibility.
Her first major fundraiser on Sept 13th at Whirlyball combines casino games, superheroes, and community connection in one memorable evening, with proceeds directly benefiting local nonprofits. Events like these are the heart of Melissa’s mission: to be a hands-on partner, bringing her experience and passion to the forefront of their needs.
Melissa invites nonprofits seeking creative solutions, and community members who want to champion local causes by supporting her work, to connect with her directly.
Visit WorldofHeartsLLC.org to start a conversation with Mel and learn more about her upcoming events.

⚖️ City Council Just Overrode the Mayor’s Veto

The Colorado Springs City Council voted 6–3 to override Mayor Yemi’s veto of a new ordinance that lets the council proactively identify and review funding programs before the mayor considers them. The mayor raised concerns about adding extra bureaucracy, especially given the city's $11.5 million budget shortfall, and emphasized his priorities of transparency, public safety, and responsible governance.
Those supporting the ordinance argue it gives the council more flexibility and influence in the budget process—not just now, but for future councils. It’s a notable shift in how decisions around sales tax revenue, could be handled moving forward.

🔥 New Fire Safety Pact Is Here

Colorado Springs Fire Department and the U.S. Forest Service are launching a first-in-Colorado partnership to tackle wildfire risk in the city’s expansive wildland urban interface (WUI). Covering over 32,000 acres, this area presents unique challenges, and the new agreement allows CSFD to do mitigation and suppression work directly on Forest Service land.
The partnership will help pool resources, improve emergency readiness, and enhance safety for both residents and first responders. Work begins August 2025 near Old Stage Road and Gold Camp Road, with completion expected by November 2026.
📵 Still Getting Spam Calls? Fix That

Spam and scam calls are out of control, but there are real steps you can take to protect yourself. Start by adding your number to the National Do Not Call Registry. Use your phone or provider’s built-in tools to block suspicious numbers and enable call labeling to spot scam attempts. Apps like Hiya or services from Verizon, T-Mobile, or AT&T can help even more. Lastly, report unwanted calls so others can avoid the same scams. Whether you’re in downtown Colorado Springs, the Westside, or out in Black Forest, these steps can keep your phone—and your peace—safer. Full Story
