πŸ›οΈ Shelter Shortage Hits Families

With homelessness in El Paso County climbing to record highs, the Salvation Army’s Family Hope Center in Colorado Springs will reduce its overnight capacity for families from 31 to 15 rooms starting October 1 because of a $1 million budget shortfall.

The shelter will continue offering meals, case management, and other supports, but staff layoffs and long waiting lists at other programs highlight the growing strain on local resources. Meanwhile, shelters for individuals, like Springs Rescue Mission, are seeing higher summer numbers, yet barriers such as shelter rules and personal circumstances keep some people from coming indoors. πŸš™ Springs’ Abandoned Car Problem β€” Solved?

Abandoned cars in Colorado Springs were left sitting longer than usual this summer after budget challenges forced Neighborhood Services to prioritize only the most hazardous vehicles for towing. While police towing was unaffected, the slowdown left some cars on streets for weeks. Now, with regular operations restored, the City has already removed more than 200 vehicles this year and continues to respond to reports through its GoCOS app, aiming to keep neighborhoods cleaner and safer. πŸ› Closed for Violations, Now Back Open

Last week, health inspectors temporarily shut down Shri Ganesh at Voyager & Ridgeline after finding:

  • No certified food protection manager on duty

  • Missing date labels on prepared foods

  • Improper temperatures for chicken and lamb

  • No thermometer available to check food temperatures

The restaurant reopened August 12 after addressing these problems, but must pass a full re-inspection within 5–10 days.

Other recent inspections saw multiple violations at places like Juanita’s Best Mexican Food (14 violations), Rodolfo’s Mexican Grill (10 violations) and Coal Mine Dragon (10 violations), to name a few.

High scores went to spots such as Mining Exchange Hotel at 8 S Nevada and Cerberus Brewing Company (702 W Colorado Ave), which is celebrating 10 years with a reputation for both great beer and exceptional food safety. Full Story

Health inspection results across El Paso County are available online for those wanting to check their favorite spots.

*Note: Most local restaurants take food safety incredibly seriously. In fact, many owners respond to violations swiftly and thoroughly, often making fixes the same day while they wait for reinspection.

🍰 High Altitude Oatmeal Cream Pie Cake

Recipe by Curly Girl Kitchen

Two layers of soft oatmeal cake spiced with cinnamon, sandwiched together with fluffy vanilla buttercream. Each bite tastes like an oatmeal creme pie but in a slice of cake.
