global Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage

A global Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage yesterday caused widespread tech disruptions across southern Colorado, with local universities like UCCS and Colorado College reporting Canvas platform issues, and District 20 schools facing outages in systems like Infinite Campus and ParentSquare. Local IT firm Propel Technology scrambled to assist clients in defense, healthcare, and professional services sectors while coping with their own access issues.

Despite frustrations, organizations across Colorado Springs stayed flexible as AWS worked to resolve the problem which is suspected to be a coding glitch and not a hack, at the time of reporting. Fortunately, key services like the Colorado Springs Airport remained unaffected. Full Story

Signs of Change in COS - City’s sign ordinance

From business owners to neighborhood groups, signs are a part of everyday life in Colorado Springsβ€”but the rules behind them haven’t been updated in over a decade. That’s about to change, and the City wants your voice in the process.

The Planning Department is in the process of modernizing the City’s sign ordinance to reflect newer technologies like digital displays, comply with updated legal rulings on content neutrality, and ensure signage across our community supports both safety and aesthetics. These updates are part of a broader effort tied to the 2023 Unified Development Code.

You're invited to a community meeting on Wed, Oct. 29, 5:30-7:30pm at the Pikes Peak Regional Building Dept Hearing Room (2880 International Cir). Your input can help shape the future of signage on private property in our growing city.

The updated ordinance could impact everything from electronic signs to maintenance standards, and coordinated plans for unique properties. The final version is expected to move through Planning Commission and City Council by early 2026.

πŸ’€ Trivia: Chilling Tale That Sparked a Beloved Tradition

Emma Crawford

Emma Crawford Portrait PPLD 001-352

Did you know Manitou Springs’ most spirited tradition started with a real woman whose story took a wild turn down Red Mountain? In 1889, musician Emma Crawford moved here hoping the clear mountain air would ease her tuberculosis. After her death just two years later, she was buried high atop Red Mountainβ€”her final wish. But heavy rains eventually sent her coffin sliding down the slopes (or more realistically her bones as they found those and the casket handle/nameplate), sparking tales that turned into legend.

In which local cemetery did Emma Crawford finally receive a permanent gravestoneβ€”more than a century after her coffin famously came down Red Mountain?

By the 1990s, that eerie event inspired today’s Emma Crawford Coffin Races (this Sat, Oct 25), where teams sprint down Manitou Avenue pushing handmade coffins and costumed β€œEmmas” to honor her memory with humor and heart.

The race isn’t just Halloween fun; it’s a celebration of resilience, creativity, and the quirky local pride that defines Colorado Springs’ nearby mountain towns. It connects modern residents to the strange, enduring stories that have always given this region character.
