🌲 Nov 11 Closures + Nature Perks

Tomorrow, Nov 11, marks Veterans Day, and the City of Colorado Springs will be closing several offices and public buildings in observance of the holiday. That includes administrative offices like City Hall and the Clerk’s Office, as well as several community centers and museums. If you had plans for paperwork or services, be sure to double-check before heading out.
The good news? Not everything is taking the day off—Sertich Ice Center and both municipal golf courses will still be open for those wanting to skate or tee off. Click for full details.
Plus, TODAY, Mon Nov 10, veterans and active-duty military can enjoy free access to the Pikes Peak Highway. It's a nice moment to enjoy nature and reflect on the contributions of those who served. And tomorrow, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is offering free entry to all state parks on Veterans Day for veterans, active-duty military, and National Guard members. No special permit is required—just show proof of service at the gate.

⏳ Will This End the Shutdown?

Here’s the latest…as the longest government shutdown in US history drags on, a funding proposal advanced in the US Senate that could reopen federal operations. The bill passed a procedural vote, but both Colorado Senators, John Hickenlooper and Michael Bennet, opposed it—raising concerns about the impact it could have on already high health care costs. They emphasized that ending the shutdown shouldn’t come at the expense of rising premiums.
While some lawmakers remain optimistic that this proposal is a step in the right direction, it still has to pass a final Senate vote, clear the House, and be signed by the President before the shutdown officially ends. We will have to wait for further details when the Senate gathers later this morning. Full Story

💧 70% of Our Water at Risk?

With the current water management guidelines for the Colorado River set to expire in 2026, seven western states—including Colorado—are under pressure to reach a new agreement by tomorrow’s deadline. The two largest reservoirs, Lake Mead and Lake Powell, are at alarmingly low levels due to prolonged drought and ongoing overuse, especially in the Lower Basin states. Colorado Springs Utilities says nearly 70% of the city’s water comes from this basin, either directly or through reuse, making these negotiations vital to our future.
If the states can’t agree soon, the federal government may step in. Local leaders continue to advocate strongly for fair treatment and long-term solutions that protect Colorado's water users. Full Story
