🩺 Insurance Premiums May Rise 30%

Colorado leaders are warning that ongoing inaction in Washington could lead to a spike in healthcare premiums especially for families enrolled in Affordable Care Act (ADA) plans. Without an agreement to extend federal subsidies, many households could face a 30% increase next year. While Democrats are urging immediate action, some Republican lawmakers insist the issue be addressed only after the government reopens. With open enrollment starting Nov 1, families are encouraged to stay updated and prepare for possible changes. Click for full press conference recording.
🤝 Local Kindness in Action: Free Meals for Fed Workers

In true community spirit, Poor Richard’s Restaurant in downtown Colorado Springs (324 1/2 N Tejon), is stepping up to support local federal employees affected by the ongoing government shutdown. Starting tomorrow, Oct 24 at 11am, furloughed or unpaid federal workers and their families can receive a free meal and drink once a week—just by showing a valid government ID. The offer will continue for the duration of the shutdown.
Owners Richard Skorman and Patricia Seator hope to ease the burden for those working without pay, and they’re encouraging others in the business community to lend a hand too. If you’d like to contribute, you can donate in-store, online, or simply round up your purchase at any of the Poor Richard’s shops. It’s a powerful reminder of how our local businesses can be a lifeline in hard times.

❄️ Late Winter May Bring a Surprise

The 2025–2026 winter season is being shaped by a weak La Niña, which often brings dry and mild conditions to Southern Colorado—especially across the plains. As of now, snowfall has been limited due to the jet stream pushing storms northward, a trend driven by a pattern known as the Pacific-North American Oscillation. These influences are expected to persist into early winter, keeping snow totals low and temperatures above average through January.
However, as La Niña weakens and other global patterns like the Arctic Oscillation and Madden-Julien Oscillation become more favorable, the door could open for more impactful snowstorms later in the season. For areas near the mountains, especially around Pikes Peak, precipitation may pick up just in time for a snowy spring finish. Full Story
