Gas Prices Dip for Thanksgiving

If you’re hitting the road for Thanksgiving, Coloradans are finding gas prices lower than expected. The drop aligns with typical seasonal patterns and doesn’t point to broader economic trouble, offering drivers a little bonus heading into the holiday rush. Those savings may help stretch holiday budgets, whether for shopping or travel later in the year. However, travelers heading toward the Western Slope or high-country communities should expect higher prices than what we’re seeing here in southern Colorado. Full Story

🦃 Safe & Crispy: Frying 101

If deep-frying your Thanksgiving turkey is part of your holiday tradition, safety is key. The CSFD is reminding families to use fryers only outdoors on a flat, open surface; fully thaw and dry their bird; avoid overfilling oil; and maintain a temperature of about 350°. A simple water-level test helps prevent spills, and a meat thermometer ensures the turkey reaches 165°.

Officials also demonstrated how quickly fires can start when a turkey is frozen or oil spills over, urging people to keep extinguishers nearby and never use water on an oil fire. Following these tips can keep the day joyful instead of sending you searching for last-minute takeout. Full Story

🧦 Brighten a Senior’s Holiday

Yevgeniya of Solid Rock Community Development Corp is encouraging the community to help make the holidays a little brighter for seniors who may feel overlooked this time of year. Residents can “adopt” a senior and assemble a small gift bag filled with simple but thoughtful items—warm socks, blankets, puzzles, treats, or anything that offers comfort and joy.

Donations will be collected until Dec 20 and delivered the week of Christmas. Anyone who wants to help can easily arrange a drop-off or pickup with the organizers, making it a meaningful and accessible way to share kindness this season.

📜 TRIVIA: When Did Thanksgiving Reach Our Region?

Did you know Colorado’s Thanksgiving story began before there even was a Colorado Springs? In 1859, during the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush, settlers on this very Front Range were already gathering in rough camps to share simple meals and give thanks for surviving the journey west and finding their footing in a new land. Those early feasts, held in what was then Kansas Territory, looked a lot different from today’s table spreads, but the heart of it—gratitude, community, and “we made it through another year”—is something Colorado Springs residents still recognize today.

Which Colorado Springs institution began hosting large community Thanksgiving meals for neighbors experiencing homelessness and hardship in the 1990s, a tradition that continues today?

When Colorado achieved statehood in 1876 and towns like Colorado Springs began to grow, Thanksgiving had already become a national holiday, and it quickly rooted itself in civic and social life here: church services, community dinners, and family gatherings that helped people feel a sense of normalcy and shared identity in a fast-changing place.

As more people arrived—from different regions and countries—Thanksgiving in Colorado Springs became a true melting pot, with immigrant families adding their own dishes and traditions to the day. That same spirit shows up now in Springs events like Turkey Trots, community meals, and a growing effort to acknowledge Indigenous histories and perspectives around the holiday. It’s always good to remember that Thanksgiving here has always been about more than one story or one table—it’s about how many different people have called this region home and found reasons to be grateful in it.
