๐ŸŒค COS Weather - Mostly sunny, breezy with frigid AM temps before warming up a bit

Ever heard of the wizard with the poor sense of balance?

๐Ÿ‘‰He only knows dizzy spells ๐Ÿคฃ

๐Ÿฅถ Frostbite Risk Causing Late Starts This AM

A bitterly cold start this morning, with dangerous wind chills raising frostbite concerns. While sunshine will help temperatures recover later today, early hours are especially harsh prompting late starts for some schools, military bases, and workplaces.

๐Ÿšง Plan Ahead For Major Ramp Closure

Starting this morning, weather permitting, the southbound S Academy Blvd on-ramp to eastbound Milton Proby Pkwy is scheduled to close at 6am as crews begin water and drainage utility upgrades. The closure is expected to remain in place through the end of May, though timelines may shift depending on conditions.

During this time, drivers are encouraged to use Hancock Expressway to connect back to Milton Proby Pkwy, especially those heading toward Colorado Springs Airport.

This work is part of the first major rebuild of S Academy since 1969 and is funded by voter-approved transportation dollars through Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority. As always, a little extra patience and travel time will go a long way during the morning commute.

With subfreezing temperatures and snow lingering across the Springs, the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region is encouraging pet owners to take a few extra steps to protect your animals during extreme cold. Snow and ice can be disorienting and dangerous, especially for pets not built for winter conditions. Key reminders include:

  • Keep pets leashed outdoors and make sure ID tags and microchip info are up to date, since snow can mask familiar scents

  • Dress for the weather: coats or sweaters can help short-haired or small dogs, as long as they stay dry

  • Watch behavior closely: shivering, slowing down, or acting โ€œoffโ€ are signs itโ€™s time to head inside

  • Know the danger signs: extreme lethargy, pale gums, or dilated pupils may signal hypothermia and require immediate vet care

  • Secure antifreeze and clean up spills right away, as itโ€™s highly toxic to pets and wildlife

  • Knock on your car hood before driving as cats and small animals often hide underneath vehicles for warmth

If you see an animal that appears unsafe in the cold, call animal control as they can help assess the situation and respond appropriately.
