πŸ”₯ Burn Restrictions Now in Effect

Due to increasingly dry conditions and high fire danger, CSFD has issued burn restrictions within city limits starting today, Tues, Feb. 17 at 8am. The order prohibits any open or contained fires in brushy or grassy areas, recreational fires, bonfires, prescribed burns, outdoor smoking in parks and open spaces, use of small engines without spark arrestors, and fireworks or trash burning.

Residents are urged to report smoke by calling 911 and to sign up for PEAK Alerts to receive emergency notifications. The restrictions are intended to reduce the risk of human-caused fires and protect homes, open spaces, and public safety.

πŸ’™ Honor a Hero: 100 Blankets Needed by Mar 2

Pikes Peak Hospice and Palliative Care is working to collect 100 patriotic blankets by March 2 to honor veterans in hospice care, and the community has already helped them reach about three-fourths of that goal. Each blanket is presented as a final thank-you for military service and often becomes a treasured keepsake for families after their loved one passes.

Volunteers are stepping up to sew and donate blankets as a way to show gratitude and remind veterans that their lives and service mattered. The organization is also seeking additional volunteers who want to serve in other supportive roles.

πŸ₯‡ Day 10 Delivers Big Moments - Olympics Update

Day 10 of the Milan Cortina Olympics brought big momentum for Team USA. Elana Meyers Taylor captured her first Olympic gold medal in women’s monobob after battling back from second place, marking a defining moment in her decorated career, while teammate Kaillie Humphries added bronze.

The U.S. women’s hockey team surged past Sweden in the semifinals with a rapid three-goal stretch and now moves on to compete for gold.

Meanwhile, the American two-man bobsled duo of Frank Del Duca and Joshua Williamson remains firmly in the hunt, sitting just one-tenth of a second outside medal position after two runs.

😱 The Night Colorado Springs Nearly Lost The Olympics

Did you know Colorado Springs almost lost its shot at becoming an Olympic hub before the dream ever touched down here?

In the mid 1970s, the old Beth‑El tuberculosis sanatorium and then Ent Air Force Base on East Boulder sat quiet and uncertain, its future completely open. At the same time, the U.S. Olympic Committee was packed into cramped New York offices, short on money and struggling to keep pace with powerful Soviet training systems. Local leaders in Colorado Springs looked at that empty 36‑acre site and saw more than abandoned buildings. They imagined a place where athletes could sleep, eat, train and dream together at 6,000 feet, backed by a community that actually wanted them here.

They offered the land, a major grant from El Pomar, and a promise that Colorado Springs would build a home, not just a headquarters. In 1977, when a harsh winter storm grounded commercial flights to a crucial Olympic meeting in Wisconsin, local leader Bill Tutt refused to let the opportunity die. He helped secure a Royal Canadian Air Force plane so the Colorado Springs delegation could still make their case in person, then hosted a reception where a very tall β€œwaiter” worked the room refilling drinks. Only later did some guests learn that friendly server was actually Mayor Larry Ochs, personally pitching our city’s future one conversation at a time.

In what year did Colorado Springs officially begin using the β€œOlympic City USA” branding for itself?

That mix of creativity, humility and hustle helped bring the Olympic Training Center here in 1978, turning an uncertain property into a place where thousands of athletes now chase medals and memories. When you drive past the OTC or the Olympic & Paralympic Museum, you are not just passing buildings; you are passing the reason thousands of athletes and their families now think of Colorado Springs as the place where their Olympic story truly began.
