🔥 Dangerous Trend in COS

The Colorado Springs Fire Department is sounding the alarm after responding to five suspected human-caused fires between Apr 22-26. Crews responded to flames in Palmer Park, 3 fires in the Broadmoor Bluffs neighborhood on a single night, and another near the intersection of I-25 and Cimarron.
The fire department is sending a clear message: setting fires on purpose is not a prank, and it is not an accident. The dry conditions in the area made each of these fires dangerous, and the same conditions are still in place now.
Those responsible are putting lives, homes, and the entire city at risk. The department is asking the community to step up.
Neighbors know their streets better than anyone, so if something looks suspicious, report it. If someone knows something, they should say something.
Anonymous tips can be submitted through Crime Stoppers at 719-634-7867. It only takes one bad choice to cause a disaster.
🚛 Military Convoys Coming

Fort Carson is sending about 1,400 military vehicles on the roads from May 3-7 for the “Ivy Mass” training exercise. The convoys will follow two main routes through El Paso County:
Most convoys will travel:
➡️ East on Hwy 94
➡️ South on Hwy 71
An alternate route may take them:
➡️ South on I-25
➡️ East on Hwy 50
Local residents are urged to use caution near the convoys as soldiers prepare for their mission. Full Story

💸 You're Not Bad With Money. You're Just Doing It Alone
That's a quote from a guy named Mikey Caloca, and it's probably the truest sentence we've read about personal finance in a while.
Think about it. We'll talk about our marriages, our health, even our therapists…but tell a friend you're behind on credit cards and watch the room go quiet. So we deal with it alone. We Google in private. We promise ourselves we'll fix it next month. Again.
Mikey runs a community called Mikey's Money House, and the whole thing is basically built around fixing that one problem: nobody to talk to about it. Members hop on multiple live classes a week - credit, debt, side hustles, investing and the topics rotate based on what people are actually dealing with. He'll even pull up a member's Credit Karma on a call and break it down with the group, live.
If "figure it out alone" hasn't worked yet, that might be the actual problem.

📸 TRIVIA: Local Colorado Springs Girl Shocked The Nation

Photographer Laura Gilpin 1891-1979
A Colorado Springs Girl Who Changed the Way the World Sees the American Southwest
Did you know that before she was one of the most important photographers in American history, Laura Gilpin was a kid growing up in Austin Bluffs, staring up at Pikes Peak and wondering about the world beyond it.
Born in 1891, Laura received a Kodak Brownie camera at age twelve, reportedly a gift from none other than General William Jackson Palmer, the founder of Colorado Springs himself. From that moment, she was hooked. She eventually traveled to New York to study at the Clarence H. White School of Photography, one of the most prestigious programs of its era, before returning to the Springs to build her career in the West.

What made Gilpin remarkable wasn't just her technical skill, it was her approach. At a time when photographers often portrayed Native Americans as relics of a vanishing past, Gilpin did the opposite. She spent decades building deep relationships within Navajo communities, photographing families, shepherds, weavers, and the vast landscapes of the Navajo Nation…not as curiosities, but as a living, breathing culture worthy of dignity and respect.
Her landmark book, The Enduring Navaho (1968), is considered a masterwork of documentary photography. It didn't romanticize or eulogize, it witnessed. Her photographs became one of the most important visual records of Navajo life across the 20th century.

The City of Colorado Springs recently connected her legacy to ongoing preservation work at Evergreen Cemetery, reminding us that whether through a camera lens or a carved headstone, the work of honoring the past is never finished. Both teach us to see the layers of history within our own communities.
💡 Fun fact: Laura Gilpin's first camera came from General Palmer, the same man who founded Colorado Springs in 1871. Two Colorado Springs legends, connected by a simple gift that changed the American Southwest forever. *Source
