🏆 Colorado Springs Public Works Earned This…

Courtesy: City of Colorado Springs Public Works

The City of Colorado Springs Public Works has received full accreditation from the American Public Works Association (APWA), a nationally recognized distinction that verifies the department meets rigorous management and operational standards. Colorado Springs joins only 11 other accredited public works agencies in the entire state of Colorado.

The accreditation covers everything from roadway maintenance and traffic engineering to stormwater infrastructure and capital improvement projects. Getting there required a formal self-assessment, independent on-site review, and approval by the APWA Accreditation Council, a process designed to ensure agencies are not just doing the work, but doing it the right way. The accreditation is valid for four years with ongoing reporting required.

😞 Homelessness Increased in COS

A new state report released Monday shows Colorado's overall homelessness rate dropped by 0.7% from 2024 to 2025, but the Pikes Peak Region was the one exception, seeing a 4.3% increase. Out of four regions tracked statewide, ours was the only one that went the wrong direction. The data comes from the Colorado Homeless Management Information System (COHMIS), funded through the federal Continuum of Care program.

A UCCS Economics Professor said the numbers could mean Colorado Springs is becoming a more favorable destination for people experiencing homelessness, and cautioned that sustained increases could eventually affect downtown vitality and tourism. There's a meaningful bright spot in the data, though: veteran homelessness in the Pikes Peak Region fell by 6.8%, outpacing even the statewide improvement of 2.9%. Full Story

🤑 The Money Community Local Readers Have Been Joining All Month - Here's What's Actually In It

If Mikey Caloca's name has been showing up in this newsletter and you've been meaning to check it out. This is the short version of what you actually get in Mikey's Money House:

  • 3 live classes every week on rotating topics: credit, debt payoff, saving, side hustles, investing, organizing your accounts. Show up, ask questions, get answers.

  • A full curriculum with chapters and videos you can start tonight, plus 75 hours of past classes in the library.

  • Direct access to Mikey. You can DM him privately, and members can book a 1-hour 1-on-1 call with him.

  • $500+ in giveaways every month - he spins a wheel and hands out gift cards to members who post their wins.

  • A community that doesn't make money weird. As Mikey puts it: "There is nowhere on the internet that you can openly join people in such a difficult topic."

Money problems compound quietly. So does the work to fix them. The difference between people who get out and people who stay stuck usually isn't intelligence or willpower, it's whether they had a room of people doing it alongside them.

Mikey built that room. He'll tell you himself: "I think you belong here."

🕰 TRIVIA: This Old Colorado City Secret Survived

Did you know Territory Days in Old Colorado City began in 1975, but its real inspiration reaches back to the time when Colorado was still a territory? The festival was created to celebrate Colorado City’s role as the first permanent town in the Pikes Peak region and, for a brief time in 1861, the first capital of the Colorado Territory.

Before it was Old Colorado City, the settlement was renamed Colorado City in 1859 as the gold rush brought more people into the region. That name ended up carrying even farther than the town itself, in fact, Colorado City was important enough to help influence the name of the Colorado Territory.

What was Old Colorado City originally called before it became Colorado City?

Territory Days started as a neighborhood celebration, but it has grown into one of the state’s largest street fairs. Today, the Memorial Day weekend event fills Colorado Ave with food, music, vendors, history displays, and the kind of old-west spirit that fits the district’s past.

That is what makes the event feel bigger than a festival. It is a reminder that Old Colorado City was here first, that it helped shape the region’s early story, and that some of the most familiar places in Colorado Springs still carry the weight of that history.

Territory Days: Sat May 23 through Mon May 25, FREE admission, W. Colorado Ave between 23rd and 27th Streets, Old Colorado City.

Answer: El Dorado, a Spanish name that means “the golden one,” fitting the gold-rush hopes tied to the town’s early days.
