I took a detour yesterday through 3 traffic circles…

👉but it got me home, in a roundabout way 🤣

🚧 Detours Start Today, Plan Ahead

Starting today, the east side of Astrozon between S Academy and Jet Wing is closed through end of June for waterline and stormline work. Business access stays open throughout.

Key dates to know:

  • Now through end of June: East side of Astrozon closed, Mon - Fri with some nights and Saturdays

  • June 5 to 8 (7pm Fri - noon Mon): Full intersection closure in all directions, day and night crews

  • June 30 to July 5: No closures for the Independence Day weekend

  • July 6 to 16: West side closure for final tie-in work

Quick detour tip for Phase 1: Use Jet Wing Dr and Hancock Expressway to get around the closure. Follow posted signs and allow extra time.

This is part of the first major reconstruction of South Academy since 1969, a voter-approved PPRTA safety and mobility project.

🎓 Avoid These Areas This Week

It is graduation week at the Air Force Academy and if you drive anywhere near USAFA, expect heavier traffic and road closures through Thursday.

  • Wednesday, May 27: Thunderbird practice, 11:30am to 5pm. Road closures and restricted parking near Falcon Stadium.

  • Thursday, May 28 (Graduation Day): Gates and stadium open at 5am. Road closures in effect from 9:30am to 1pm. Arrive early if attending.

Avoid the area during those windows if you're not attending. Alternate routes and extra travel time are strongly encouraged.

🔔 The Bell That Never Lets a Veteran Be Forgotten

Six months ago, Colorado Springs got its own Pikes Peak Honor Bell, one of only two in the country built specifically to honor veterans at their final farewell. In those 6 months, it has been tolled at nearly 270 services.

The bell weighs 1,000 pounds of bronze and contains 12 artifacts from 12 Colorado service members, including a Purple Heart, nurse wings, a piece of the USS Arizona, and a Marine's dog leash. It was forged in the Netherlands and carried home by the Bell Guard.

The bell is tolled seven times, once for each stage of a veteran's life, ending with the gold raised star: the value of a veteran's life.

Larry Peterson, a Vietnam veteran and the driving force behind bringing Honor Bell 002 to the Pikes Peak region, put in over 1,100 volunteer hours last year alone.

The original goal was simple: no veteran should go to rest without an honor. The Bell Guard shows up in rain, snow, and cold. Every time. Full Story

🦅 TRIVIA: The Symbol That Started It All

Early Construction on the Cadet Chapel (1959)

Did you know the U.S. Air Force Academy’s first class had to start at a temporary site in Denver before the campus in Colorado Springs was ready? On July 11, 1955, 306 men swore in at Lowry Air Force Base, then later moved to the newly built Academy once it was ready for occupancy in 1958.

Why did the first Air Force Academy class choose the specific mascot?

That means the Academy’s story is not just about the impressive campus people see today. It is also about the years of building, waiting, and preparing that came before it ever became the place so many people know now. The first class helped shape cadet life early on by choosing the falcon as the mascot and establishing the Honor Code, both of which still matter today.

The first class graduated and was commissioned on June 3, 1959, turning that long buildup into a milestone moment for the Academy and Colorado Springs that became its home.

Capt Lance P. Sijan, Class of 1965. The Academy's First Medal of Honor recipient

Answer: The Falcon, because it symbolized speed, graceful flight, courage, alertness, and noble carriage. *Source
