💡 Your Electric Bill Just Changed Again

As of Monday June 1, Colorado Springs Utilities has switched to its Energy Wise summer rates, and if you haven't adjusted a few habits yet, this is your heads-up.

Here is the key change: during on-peak hours (5- 9pm on weekdays), your electric rate jumps from about $0.15 per kWh to about $0.29 per kWh. That is nearly double. Outside those hours, including all weekend, the off-peak rate actually drops to about $0.07 per kWh.

The short version: run your dishwasher, laundry, EV charger, and AC before 5pm or after 9pm, and you could come out ahead. CSU says the system is revenue-neutral and customers who shift their habits can expect to pay about 5% less overall compared to the old flat rate.

The summer rates run through Sept 30. For tips and resources, visit csu.org/EWtips. If you need utility assistance, United Way can help connect you to programs.

🚦 34 Spots in Our City Are Getting Safer

Part 1 of a 4-day series on the city's Safe Streets COS program. This week: where, what, and why.

The City of Colorado Springs is rolling out 34 temporary street safety projects across the city from June through August. The goal: figure out what actually works to slow cars down and protect walkers, cyclists, and kids near schools.

The program is funded by a federal Safe Streets and Roads for All grant ($1.05 million) plus $262,000 in city matching funds. Each installation is temporary, designed to collect before-and-after data. If it works, it gets considered for a permanent fix.

Five types of improvements are being tested: neighborhood traffic circles, speed tables, speed feedback signs, flashing school zone signs, and protected bike lanes. This week we will cover each one. Today: the traffic circles.

🔄 Neighborhood Traffic Circles (7 locations)

Seven intersections across the city are getting traffic circles designed to slow speeds and reduce serious side-impact crashes. If you live near any of these, you may notice construction starting soon:

  • S El Paso Ave and S Corona Ave

  • Valley Hi Ave and Parkhill Dr

  • Pikes Peak Ave and 22nd St

  • Capulin Dr and Shasta Dr

  • Capulin Dr and Server Dr

  • Montebello Dr and Del Paz Dr

  • Monica Dr West and Moonbeam Dr

Tomorrow: speed tables near schools and parks.

🤠 TRIVIA: A Ranch, A Fire, And A Comeback Story

Did you know the Flying W Ranch began with just 11 guests at its very first chuckwagon supper in 1953? What started as a family idea on ranch land west of Colorado Springs grew into one of the region’s most beloved Western traditions, complete with dinner, music, and a show that people returned for year after year.

The ranch itself has deeper roots. The land traces back to the Douglas Homestead and was purchased in 1947 by Don Wilson, whose family still owns and works the ranch today. By 1953, Marian and Russ Wolfe were inviting guests to supper, and a few years later the Flying W Wranglers were born, giving the ranch its signature sound.

What historic Colorado Springs figure originally owned the land where Flying W Ranch now sits?

1972 Flying W Ranch

Then came the kind of loss that could have ended the story. The Waldo Canyon Fire destroyed the ranch in 2012, along with buildings, artifacts, and nearby homes. But the family rebuilt, and Flying W Ranch reopened in 2020, carrying the same Western spirit forward for a new generation.

That is why the Flying W still matters. It is not just dinner and a show. It is a family story, a local tradition, and one of those places where Colorado Springs history feels alive instead of buried in a museum.
