🚸 Safer Schools, Safer Bike Lanes

Part 4 of 4: Safe Streets COS wraps up. This week: traffic circles, speed tables, speed signs. Today: school zone lights and protected bike lanes.
The final two improvements in the city's Safe Streets COS program round out a comprehensive summer of road safety upgrades across Colorado Springs.
🏫 Flashing School Zone Signs (5 schools)
Ring-flashing lights added to school zone signs, timed to activate during school hours:
Ridgeview Elementary, Shimmering Creek Dr
Chinook Trail Elementary/Middle School, Fraser Valley Ln and Grand Lawn Cir
Panorama Middle School, S Chelton
Audubon Elementary School, Patrician Way
Encompass Heights Elementary School, Thunder Mountain Ave
🚲 Protected Bike Lanes (4 corridors)
Delineator posts added to create a physical buffer between cyclists and traffic:
Pikes Peak Ave, Corona St to Nevada
Cheyenne Blvd, Cresta Rd to Sumner St
Hancock Expressway, East Fountain Blvd to S Union
Fountain Blvd, Hancock to S Circle
All 34 projects across the city are temporary. The city will evaluate which improvements work best and consider making them permanent. Full program: ColoradoSprings.gov/SafeStreetsCOS.

🥾 Wildlife, Views & Almost No Crowds

Just 12 miles southwest of Colorado Springs on Highway 115, Aiken Canyon Preserve sits quietly off the road. This 1,621-acre Nature Conservancy preserve protects one of the last intact foothill ecosystems along Colorado's Front Range, and the 4-mile loop trail takes you through grasslands, sandstone outcrops, wooded canyons, and sweeping views toward Pikes Peak.
Wildlife here is the real draw. More than 100 bird species have been recorded at the canyon, including golden eagles, prairie falcons, and red-tailed hawks soaring above the rim. Elk, mule deer, and coyotes roam the meadows below. Spring and early summer bring wildflowers. It is the kind of place that makes you wonder why you haven't been here before.
Getting there: Off Hwy 115, approx. 12 miles southwest of COS. Small gravel lot at the trailhead. Free. Open sunrise to sunset. nature.org | trailsandopenspaces.org
