We told you we'd keep an eye on Project Taurus, and there's been a significant update.

The City of Colorado Springs Planning Dept has approved the proposed AI data center planned for the former industrial site at 1565 High Tech Way near Garden of the Gods Road. The approval was handled administratively rather than through a public hearing process, which has become a major point of contention for some nearby residents who say they learned of the decision days later through a city email.

Meanwhile, the developer says several neighborhood concerns were addressed during the review process, including relocating generators away from nearby homes, adding a 30-foot sound wall, implementing ongoing noise monitoring, funding a third-party audit after construction, and setting aside a $1 million bond for corrective actions if needed. The appeal period remains open until June 22 at 5pm with a cost of $176 to process, after which the project would move into the next phase if no appeal is filed. Full Story

⛰️ The Journey Finally Ends

A remarkable piece of Colorado and American history is completed a journey more than 220 years in the making.

Through Aug 10, visitors of the Pikes Peak Summit Visitor Center have the rare opportunity to see Zebulon Pike's original field notebook on display at the summit of the mountain that now bears his name. The notebook accompanied Pike during his 1806 expedition, when harsh winter weather forced him and his team to turn back before reaching the top.

The exhibit also features Pike's sword and his military commission signed by President James Madison. Together, the artifacts offer a fascinating look at one of the earliest expeditions into the region and the history that helped shape the American West.

For many history lovers, the most meaningful part may be that Pike's notebook is finally reaching the summit he never did.

🏎 TRIVIA: The Hidden Story Behind The Climb

Did you know the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb began in 1916 as a way to publicize Spencer Penrose’s new mountain highway? Penrose had finished converting the old carriage road into the Pikes Peak Highway that same year, then launched the first race to draw visitors and showcase the road’s daring climb.

The first winner was Rea Lentz, who took the inaugural race in a homemade car. From there, the event grew into The Race to the Clouds, a brutal 12.42-mile run with 156 turns from 9,390 feet to the 14,115-foot summit. What makes it legendary is not just the altitude, but the fact that drivers can start in sunshine and finish in sleet, hail, fog, or snow.

What Colorado Springs racing family helped shape Pikes Peak Hill Climb history before the race officially began?

The race has been paused only during World War I and World War II, and it is now known as the second-oldest motorsports race in America. Over more than a century, it has gone from a local publicity stunt to a global test of drivers, machines, and nerve.

That is the kind of history that still feels alive when race week comes around. It is a story built on ambition, mountain weather, and the kind of challenge that turns a road into a legend.

Answer: The Unser family, who were climbing Pikes Peak by motorcycle in 1915. *Source1 *Source2
