🚀 Big Win For COS Space Tech

Courtesy: The Gazette

A Colorado Springs startup is making waves in the space industry after securing a $15M investment to expand technology designed to identify and analyze objects orbiting Earth.

Citra Space, headquartered off Garden of the Gods, is developing specialized hardware and software that helps determine not just where satellites and other space objects are, but what they may be capable of doing. Company leaders say the technology could help fill an important gap in space awareness as more satellites are launched around the world. Full Story

🍣 Restaurants Stumble with Inspection

Each week, El Paso County Public Health inspects local restaurants and posts the results publicly. We pull directly from their database so you know where things stand. Here's what caught our eye this week.

Here's a breakdown of the most recent results:

⚠️ RE-INSPECTION REQUIRED

🍽️ Totem

📍 315 E Pikes Peak Ave | 📅 Inspected Jun 15-26, 2026 | ⚠️ 10 violations

This downtown spot racked up the most violations of any restaurant we found this cycle.

At a glance: not monitoring food temps, a soiled/understocked handwashing sink, unsanitized cutting boards, a hot-holding miss, expired cream cheese, missing time-control labels (repeat), and a cooler running too warm.

Most serious issues:

  • Four separate cold-holding failures in one visit: milk at 48°F, pancake mix at 60°F, potatoes at 60°F, and yogurt at 51°F, all well above the safe 41°F threshold.

  • The pizza cooler was running at 46°F, above the safe limit, and was not fixed during the visit, it still needs repair.

  • A required time-control label was missing on hollandaise sauce, the same paperwork lapse cited on a previous inspection (Repeat).

🔥 Yakitori 1 & Bangkok Cuisine

📍 3338 Austin Bluffs Pkwy | 📅 Inspected Jun 15-26, 2026 | ⚠️ 9 violations

This was a repeat issue for this Austin Bluffs spot.

At a glance: No certified food protection manager, missing illness-response procedures (repeat), a hand sink used for non-handwashing tasks, dirty prep surfaces, undercooked chicken skewers, and broken coolers (repeat).

Most serious issues:

  • Partially-cooked chicken found held at 54°F near the grill, the same cold-holding problem inspectors cited last time around (Repeat).

  • Two coolers are out of commission, a non-functioning prep cooler relying on ice, and a reach-in cooler that can't hold food below 41°F, the same equipment failure flagged before (Repeat).

  • No certified food protection manager was on staff at the time of inspection.

🍣 Ubin Sushi

📍 460 N Murray Blvd | 📅 Inspected Jun 15-26, 2026 | ⚠️ 9 violations

Another repeat violation for this Murray Blvd spot.

At a glance: No certified food protection manager (repeat), a dish machine running with no detectable sanitizer, improperly thawed fish, sushi rice held without time controls, and wiping cloths stored outside sanitizer solution.

Most serious issues:

  • Raw chicken stored over lettuce and raw eggs over tomatoes in the walk-in, a cross-contamination risk inspectors had already flagged before (Repeat).

  • The dish machine tested at zero detectable sanitizer, the same problem cited before (Repeat); staff called for a service repair.

  • No certified food protection manager was on staff, the same staffing gap noted previously (Repeat).

🌮 Tacos El Amigo 2

📍 3005 N Hancock Ave | 📅 Inspected Jun 15-26, 2026 | ⚠️ 5 violations

A repeat violation here too.

At a glance: Improper cooling methods (repeat) and no sanitizer test strips on hand, on top of the storage issue below.

Most serious issues:

  • Raw fish, shrimp, and bacon stored above ready-to-eat food, the same storage mistake noted on a previous visit (Repeat).

  • 24 pounds of beans and beef broth had to be tossed because they weren't cooled properly, the same cooling-method issue cited before (Repeat).

  • No sanitizer test strips on hand to verify dishes were properly disinfected.

Good News! Plenty of clean kitchens this week too.

😊 Passed

🌟 PERFECT SCORE, Zero Violations

One local kitchen came through this week with absolutely zero violations. Not one. This spot is running a tight, clean operation and deserves a standing ovation.

  • High Rise Pizza Kitchen (6660 Delmonico Dr Unit F) | 0 violations

    • This Northeast pizza shop makes its dough by hand and builds pizzas with fresh, locally sourced ingredients, with build-your-own pies plus gluten-free and vegetarian options on the menu.

Also passed, but not perfect this week:

  • 🍨 Dice Guys Homemade Ice Cream (29 E Moreno Ave) | 1 violation -sanitizer concentration was off; fixed on the spot.

  • 🧀 Graze Craze (2035 B St) | 1 violation - no certified food manager on site.

  • 🍽️ The Local Table (215 Fontaine Blvd) | 1 violation - a glove-change lapse; corrected on the spot.

Health inspection results across El Paso County are available online for those wanting to check their favorite spots.

*Note: Most local restaurants take food safety incredibly seriously. In fact, many owners respond to violations swiftly and thoroughly, often making fixes the same day while they wait for reinspection.

🥗 Easy Asian Broccoli Crunch Salad

Photo: Season Two Taste

Created by local Colorado Springs chef, Christine Miller at Season Two Taste.

This crunchy make-ahead salad tosses fresh broccoli, cabbage, carrots, and edamame with sunflower seeds and dried cranberries, all coated in a tangy soy-ginger dressing with a little chili heat. It is a colorful, easy side that actually tastes better the next day, so it is a great pick for meal prep or a summer cookout.

🥾 Nancy Lewis Park: A Quiet Pond Escape

Credit: Trails and Open Space Coalition

Looking for a low-key spot for a walk this weekend? Nancy Lewis Park is a quiet 8.9-acre neighborhood gem off Templeton Gap Road near Union and Fillmore, built around a small pond with wetlands, rock features, and a footbridge that's popular with the local ducks (and the people who come to watch them).

Credit: Trails and Open Space Coalition with lily pads

A paved walking loop circles the whole park, making it an easy, accessible option for families and casual exercisers alike. Beyond the pond views, you'll find a playground, a fitness station, picnic tables, a sand volleyball court, and a croquet and putting green, plus plenty of benches for taking it all in.

The park also carries some neighborhood history, including a hospice tree dedication and a legacy wall, and has become a well-loved gathering spot for the surrounding community.
