Ice Rink - Adults Welcome Too!

Courtesy Learn To Skate USA

Sertich Ice Center reopened Monday after its annual ice rebuild and here's the part worth sharing: skating lessons aren't just for kids. The city's Learn to Skate USA program returns for ages 3 through adult, with classes starting July 25. First-timers are absolutely welcome.

Public skating sessions are also back at the NHL-sized rink. Whether you've been on the ice before or never tried it, now's the time to give it a shot. The nationally recognized program builds confidence and skills at your own pace, no experience needed.

🏠 This Neighborhood Maps Its Own History

In Middle Shooks Run, some homes have been standing since the 1880s and the neighbors who live there now are making sure those stories don't disappear. Residents are building an interactive online map where anyone in the neighborhood can add what they've uncovered about their own property: who lived there, what it was built for, what changed over the decades. How cool is that?!

With such an interesting mix of architecture, they span the 1880s through roughly the 1940s with very iconic styles. The vice president of the neighborhood association, Samantha Meigs grew up in her 1903 home, moved back, and has been renovating it ever since. While working on the house, she traced one fixture to a toilet model made in 1908 and tracked down a matching replacement.

Even Stellina Pizza Cafe has a history, its building was originally the McNabb Market grocery store, built in 1902. Full story

🤠 Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo Starts TODAY!

🚌 Fort Carson's Free Ride Is Picking Up Speed

For a military town, getting around post and into the city has always been a challenge. The Carson Connector is changing that. The on-demand ride-share service launched for Fort Carson personnel and employees - and has already logged more than 10,000 rides, with ridership growing to 7 times the original projections.

The service is free and runs through the "Ride Fountain Transit" app, available on your phone. If you live or work near Fort Carson, it's worth downloading.

For a community where thousands of service members rely on getting from base to town and back, this kind of practical, zero-cost option matters.

🤠 TRIVIA: Before It Became A Legend

Spencer Penrose at the rodeo
El Pomar Foundation

Did you know the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo starts today, but it is not the same rodeo that first charged into the Broadmoor grounds in 1937? That was the Will Rogers Rodeo, a grand new idea built by Spencer Penrose in memory of the beloved cowboy comedian. One year later, the name changed to Pikes Peak or Bust, and the spirit of that first summer of dust, music, and cheering crowds has never really left Colorado Springs.

If you’ve been here long enough, you remember the way the town used to feel during rodeo week: the parade winding through downtown, the cowboy breakfast with straight-up coffee and pancakes, and the Range Riders riding out from downtown to announce the start of the events. The rodeo has moved through many places…outdoors at the Broadmoor, then the Pikes Peak Equestrian Center, indoors at World Arena, and back outdoors at the Norris‑Penrose Event Center in 2005, but those memories stick longer than any arena wall.

How many years did the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo originally run at the Broadmoor before moving to its next permanent home?

Courtesy Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo

There were pauses, too. The war years stopped the rodeo for a while, and the pandemic did the same in 2020, but the community kept coming back. Every year since 1946, all proceeds have gone to support service members and their families here in the Pikes Peak Region, so when you watch the bull riding, the barrel racing, and the girls’ breakdown, you’re also watching a little piece of local generosity in action.

Today’s version is bigger and partly built around the NFR Open, but it is still the same face of western heritage that Penrose tried to build. The ground has changed, the stars have changed, and the crowds are different, but the heart of it is still here on the Westside, and in the people who keep coming back to say, “I was here.”

Answer: The rodeo ran at the Broadmoor for 28 years (from 1937 to 1965) before moving to the Pikes Peak Equestrian Center. *Source
