Back-to-school drives help students get off to a great start, but for many teachers, the need doesn't end once the first bell rings.

National surveys show educators spend between $500 and $900 of their own money each school year on classroom supplies, with some spending well over $1,000 to make sure every student has what they need to learn. Items like pencils, paper, tissues, markers, and other everyday essentials often need to be replenished throughout the year.

If you'd like to support a local teacher, consider reaching out to a neighborhood school to ask if there's a classroom wish list or a teacher who could use a little extra help. Even a small donation can make a meaningful difference. Full Story

If you've been hanging onto an old TV or a stack of worn-out tires, El Paso County's free Clean Sweep event on Friday, Aug 14 is a great opportunity to clear them out. The event is open to El Paso and Teller County households and accepts up to 2 TVs and 9 passenger or light truck tires (no rims) per household, but advance registration and a ticket are required and spots are going fast.

Drop-offs will take place at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility on 3255 Akers Dr, COS 80922. This event is limited to TVs and tires only, other household hazardous waste such as paint, chemicals, batteries, and motor oil will not be accepted that day, although those items can be recycled during the facility's regular operating hours.

Looking for an easy way to enjoy a summer evening? Head to Bancroft Park in Old Colorado City tonight for a FREE concert featuring Dina Baker and the King Stan Band, bringing soulful blues and R&B to the heart of the neighborhood.

Pack a lawn chair or blanket, grab dinner from one of Old Colorado City's local restaurants, and settle in for an evening of live music under the summer sky. Free popcorn will also be available while supplies last.

Did you know Colorado Springs kids once turned a steep Westside hill into their own backyard raceway? In the 1920s, neighborhood racers lined up on White Loaf Hill, later moving to Ridge Rd, and sent handmade cars hurtling toward Pikes Peak Avenue with nothing but gravity, nerve, and a whole lot of hometown bravado.

It was a beautiful kind of local mischief. According to the Old Colorado City Historical Society, the cars were built from equal-sized wheels, metal axles, a wooden chassis, a steering wheel, a seat, and even a fake radiator so the racers looked like the stock cars that inspired them. Ira Current, whose family lived right at 32nd St and Pikes Peak Ave, had a front-row seat to the action and eventually filmed the races with an early 16mm camera, preserving a slice of Westside childhood that still feels alive today.

That is what makes this story so special for locals. Before screens, apps, and organized entertainment, kids on the Westside made their own adventure, racing down hills and turning neighborhood streets into a source of pride and laughter. You can almost hear the cheers, the clatter of homemade wheels, and the scrape of gravel on a summer afternoon.
