Family-owned Monse’s Pupuseria, who always does well on their restaurant inspections, is facing an estimated $80,000 or more in losses after theft and vandalism struck both its Downtown and Old Colorado City locations this year. Damage has included stolen rooftop HVAC equipment, broken windows and problems involving exterior lighting, electrical, gas and water systems.

The earlier incident at the Downtown location contributed to delaying its grand opening, while the more recent damage at the OCC restaurant added another financial blow. The owners are documenting repairs, working with police and insurance, and have upgraded alarms and security cameras, including rooftop coverage. They’re also encouraging fellow local businesses to stay vigilant and regularly check areas of their properties that may be out of sight.

The Pioneer Rodeo is putting out a call for volunteers to help with this year's event at the Norris Penrose Event Center on Fri, Aug. 14 and Sat, Aug. 15. Organizers are looking for enthusiastic people willing to pitch in behind the scenes and help make the rodeo a great experience for the community. For those who love rodeo, or simply enjoy volunteering at local events, it’s a chance to meet people, give back and see some of the action from a whole different perspective.

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo's two eight-month-old grizzly bear cubs are ready for names, and the community gets to help choose them while supporting grizzly conservation at the same time.

For a minimum $5 donation, votes can be cast for one of three name pairs. The female cub's name is listed first, followed by her brother's:

Here's the fun part: this isn't simply the most votes wins. The name pair that raises the most money wins, and 100% of the proceeds will benefit the Vital Ground Foundation and its work protecting and restoring wild grizzly habitat.

Voting is open through Tuesday, Aug. 25, and participants can donate any amount starting at $5. The Zoo will announce the winning names after voting closes.

Did you know... before there were hotel rooms, tennis courts or the familiar Kissing Camels golf course, Al Hill stood on an empty mesa above Garden of the Gods and saw possibility in the sweeping red rocks and Pikes Peak view? Hill, an oilman who came to Colorado as a young man, bought the mesa in 1948 and, with his wife Margaret, imagined a place where people could pause, breathe deeply and share that extraordinary landscape.

Question: Before developing the Garden of the Gods Club, which beloved Colorado Springs attraction did Al Hill buy and turn into a tourist destination?

Their vision opened as the private Garden of the Gods Club on June 14, 1951. Its first chapter was glamorous: a members-only retreat with a 90,000-gallon heated pool, stables, golf and tennis, an ambitious new landmark overlooking a city still finding its postwar stride.

Through the decades, the property evolved from an exclusive club into a resort and wellness destination, but the feeling remains familiar: late-afternoon light on the sandstone, the mountain in the distance, and a view that still makes locals stop for a moment.
