😠 CSU Utility Bill Anger Boils Over
Higher summer utility bills are fueling growing frustration in Colorado Springs, with petitions now calling for an independent audit of Colorado Springs Utilities and the resignation of CEO Travas Deal.
One petition grew out of the local Facebook community The 411 for the 719. According to KKTV, Colorado Springs. A poll connected to it found about 67% of signers reported their utility bill had increased by at least $100.
The petition asks for an independent third-party review of several things customers have been questioning, including:
Smart-meter accuracy
How peak-hour charges are calculated
How peak usage windows are determined
A separate petition calls for Deal’s resignation, arguing affordability has not been given enough priority.
CSU says there are other factors behind higher bills. This summer has been hotter than normal, meaning more air-conditioning use, while some rate increases are funding a 5-year infrastructure plan approved by City Council. CSU also says its average rates remain 14% below other Front Range utilities.
For now, the petitions are adding another voice to a larger community conversation: Why are bills rising, and are customers getting enough information to understand exactly what they're paying for? Full Story

🐻 Bear shenanigans at Station 16
Colorado Springs firefighters at Station 16, on the west side had an uninvited guest this week. A bold bear (should we call him Smokey Bear??!!) strolled right into the station bay and walked off with one of their gear bags. Both CSFD and Colorado Parks and Wildlife are using the moment to remind everyone: secure your stuff.
CPW describes black bears right now as "a stomach with a nose", in full pre-winter bulking mode. That means anything with a scent is fair game: trash cans, bird feeders, pet food, and unsecured grills are all on the menu.
Quick tips: lock up your trash, take down bird feeders, keep pet food inside, clean your grill after every use, and put trash out only on pickup morning. If you spot a bear, make noise and make the encounter uncomfortable for them. Full Story
🌄 Tomorrow: Car-Free Garden of the Gods
Tomorrow morning is your last chance this year. Garden of the Gods holds the final Early Bird Hike & Bike of 2026 on Aug 26, opening the park's roads to cyclists, joggers, and walkers from 5-8am while motor vehicles stay out.
The event is free. E-bikes are welcome. Dogs must be leashed. Skateboards and rollerblades are not allowed. Free parking is available at the Trading Post, Lot 1, Lot 9, and Lot 15, all accessible. Normal cycling speed limits apply throughout the park.

🎬 TRIVIA: Our Courthouse Went Hollywood

The 1903 El Paso County Courthouse on Tejon Street, now home to the Pioneers Museum, has quietly anchored downtown Colorado Springs for over a century. But in 1990, it stepped into a bigger story. The courthouse became the backdrop for a CBS television movie, giving our city a supporting role in a national broadcast.
Question: What major award did The Incident win in 1990?
Walter Matthau came to Colorado Springs to film The Incident, a courtroom drama set during World War II era. The production brought Hollywood to our downtown, and local residents were invited to appear as extras in the courtroom scenes. The film was directed by Joseph Sargent and co-starred Susan Blakely, Harry Morgan, and Robert Carradine.
For one season, our stately neoclassical courthouse was a Hollywood set, and some of our neighbors may have sat in those courtroom seats at time of filming. Not bad for a building that was already 87 years old at the time.
