⛽ Buc-ee's Is Officially One Step Closer
The wait for a Buc-ee's in El Paso County just got a little shorter. Yesterday, the Board of County Commissioners ruled that the proposed Buc-ee's travel center near the Tri-Lakes area as a convenience store and meets the criteria for an allowed use in the C-1 commercial zoning district, clearing one of the biggest hurdles in the approval process.
This was a quasi-judicial proceeding, meaning the board based its decision strictly on the Land Development Code and evidence in the public hearing record. The ruling resolves only the land-use classification question that was before the board.
It does not approve construction. Buc-ee's still needs to submit a site development plan reviewed by county staff for compliance with lighting, landscaping, parking, traffic, and required roadway improvements. That review is administrative and does not return to the commissioners for approval.

🥾 Pine Forests, History + Big Views
Just west of Monument in Pike National Forest, Monument Preserve features miles of multi-use trails through shady ponderosa pine forest, rich forestry history from its nursery roots, and sweeping Front Range views from Monument Rock.
What makes this preserve special is its history. The Monument Nursery, established in 1907, grew millions of seedlings here that were planted across Colorado and beyond to restore land damaged by wildfire, mining, and overgrazing. You can still find remnants of old irrigation structures and foundations on the trails today.
Plan Your Visit: Access from Mount Herman Road west of Monument. Free entry, open dawn to dusk. Dogs welcome on leash. Trails connect into Pike National Forest for longer adventures. Hiking, mountain biking, equestrian, running, birdwatching, and snowshoeing are all welcome.
