🥪 Capriotti's Reopens Today

Capriotti's Sandwich Shop officially returns to Colorado Springs today, Sept. 15, with a grand reopening celebration at 5856 Barnes Road, several months after all three local locations suddenly closed. Those restaurants had been operated by a husband-and-wife franchise team, but Capriotti's has now taken direct corporate ownership of the Barnes and Cheyenne Road locations as part of an effort to rebuild its presence in the Springs.
The InterQuest restaurant will remain closed, while the Creekwalk location at 140 E. Cheyenne Road is expected to reopen in October.
Today's Barnes Road celebration begins at 9 a.m. Here's what's happening:
First 50 customers receive a free small sub for a future visit, plus prizes throughout the day
2 to 4 p.m.: Free subs for a year giveaway
5 to 8 p.m.: Swag bag giveaways
For locals who wondered whether Capriotti's was gone for good after those unexpected spring closures, the answer is no, but the way the restaurants are being run has changed.
🖼️ Can Art Make Better Doctors?

When three second-year medical students stood before their classmates in a Colorado Springs lecture hall, they posed a question medicine doesn't usually ask: could art make them better doctors?
The students are part of the University of Colorado Anschutz School of Medicine program that sends 30 students to Colorado Springs each year. They spent the year researching how creative expression, whether painting, pottery, or printmaking, can help build resilience, sharpen patient observation skills, and reduce burnout. Their findings were striking: more than half of classmates used art as a stress reliever at some point, but that number dropped to just 33% during their demanding second year. So they organized a student and physician art show in University Hall on the UCCS campus, with pieces by fellow students and UCHealth doctors alike.
The program, now in its 11th year in Colorado Springs, is growing more popular each year. Next year's curriculum will include a painting assignment and writing exercises, and the next art show is planned for Aug 2027. Full Story

🛩 TRIVIA: The History Flying Over COS

Did you know the Pikes Peak Regional Airshow gives Colorado Springs a rare chance to watch history lift right off the runway?
This weekend, Sept. 19 and 20, families will gather at the south end of Colorado Springs Airport to watch vintage warplanes and today's military aircraft cross the sky. Some visitors will know every detail about the planes overhead. Others will simply hear the rumble, feel it in their chest, and look up with the same wide-eyed wonder as the child standing beside them.
That is what makes the airshow matter here. In a community shaped by service members, veterans, the Air Force Academy, Peterson Space Force Base, Fort Carson, and countless aviation families, an airshow is not just a loud afternoon. It is a chance to recognize the pilots, crews, mechanics, and families whose lives are connected to flight.

What aircraft will demonstrate its Modular Airborne FireFighting System (MAFFS) at the 2026 Pikes Peak Regional Airshow?
It also helps keep our local history within reach. Proceeds from the Pikes Peak Regional Airshow support three Colorado Springs museums devoted to preserving and teaching that history: the National Museum of World War II Aviation, Peterson Air and Space Museum, and the 4th Infantry Division Museum at Fort Carson. In 2024, the airshow donated $75,000, with $25,000 going to each museum.
So when the engines start this weekend, watch closely. You are not just seeing an aircraft pass overhead. You are watching a piece of our region's story, kept alive for those of us who remember it and for the next generation, just beginning to learn what those planes meant and the history unfold in the air.
