π§ New Closure Today for 4 Weeks

Image by City of Colorado Springs
Heading downtown? Plan a few extra minutes. N Stone Ave between E Fillmore and 4th streets closes today (Tues, Oct 27) at 7am and stays closed through Fri, Nov 20, weather permitting, while crews install a new underground stormwater pipe.
Detours: Northbound drivers go east on Fillmore, north on N El Paso St, then west on 4th back to Stone. Southbound through traffic from Nichols St is sent over to N El Paso.
The good news: every business stays open and reachable, so please keep supporting them while the orange cones are up. Just know on-street parking is off-limits in the work zone through early 2027, and Stone stays open both ways from the alley just north of McDonald's to East 4th.
It's all part of the City's North Stone Avenue Stormwater Improvements Project, which will help cut down on flooding along the street and let property owners connect to the new system down the road.

π₯ͺ Saying Goodbye to South Jersey Subs

Some news that's hard to swallow: after many years of serving our community, South Jersey Subs is closing its doors. Their last day is this Fri, Oct 30.
In a heartfelt note to customers, the team thanked everyone for their loyalty, friendship and support, and said it has truly been their pleasure and privilege to serve us. For so many East Coast transplants, it was a little taste of home right here in the Springs.
If you have a favorite sub, now's the time to go get it one last time and say thank you in person. Find them at 1726 Brookwood Dr (Vista Grande area), (719) 531-5100, through Friday. Go support them if you can, for their last few days.

π Trivia: The Man of a Thousand Faces Was Born Right Here

Lon Chaney in The Phantom of the Opera (1925)
Did you know one of Hollywood's very first horror legends was a Colorado Springs kid? Long before he terrified moviegoers as the Phantom of the Opera, Lon Chaney was born right here on April 1, 1883.
Both of his parents were deaf. They met at the Colorado School for the Education of Mutes, founded by Lon's grandfather, Jonathan Ralston Kennedy, and known today as the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind. Lon grew up talking with his parents in sign language, telling whole stories with his face and hands, a gift that would one day make him a star of the silent screen.

Chaney Chaney, 1923
He started on stage in 1902 and made his way to Hollywood, where he did his own makeup at a time when studios didn't even have makeup departments. His jaw-dropping transformations earned him the nickname "The Man of a Thousand Faces," with unforgettable roles as Quasimodo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923) and Erik in The Phantom of the Opera (1925).

Lon Cheney as Quasimodo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923)
Sadly, he died in 1930 at just 47, the same year he made his first and only talking picture. His son carried on the family name as Lon Chaney Jr., best known as The Wolf Man (1941). And next time you catch a show at City Auditorium on Kiowa Street, look for his name: the theater inside is named after our hometown Phantom. π» *Source
