🐆 Mango & Basha: A Bittersweet Goodbye Awaits
Mango and Basha, the first Amur leopards born at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in nearly 20 years, are set to move to other accredited zoos as part of a species survival plan. The zoo has been training them extensively to ensure they can adapt to their new environments, including crate training and exposure to varied habitats. These moves, expected between this fall and next spring, are crucial for the species' conservation, as Amur leopards are among the rarest big cats in the world. While their departure is bittersweet for the zoo staff, it marks an important step in the global effort to save these critically endangered animals.
🗑️ Creek Week Cleanup: Join the Mission
Fountain Creek Watershed District’s 11th Annual Creek Week Cleanup will take place from Sept 28 to Oct 6, 2024, across El Paso and Pueblo counties. The event, which begins with the Litter Letter Project at America the Beautiful Park, is the largest watershed-wide cleanup in Colorado.
Volunteers will work to remove trash and debris from waterways, parks, and open spaces, contributing to improved water quality and a cleaner environment. Over the past decade, 20,000 volunteers have removed more than 150,000 tons of trash through this initiative. The event offers opportunities for community service, family participation, and team-building. Click here to learn how you can sign up or get more information.
🚧 S Academy Closed at Night All Week
South Academy will be closed nightly today through Sat Sept 7 as part of an ongoing bridge reconstruction project under I-25. The closures will require traffic to detour via the I-25 on- and off-ramps, with eastbound lanes closed 7pm-6am today through Thursday and from 8pm-7am Friday and Saturday.
Westbound lanes will close 6pm-4:30am today through Thursday and 7pm-7 am Friday and Saturday.
Additionally, I-25 will experience right lane closures between S Academy and Santa Fe during nighttime hours. Drivers should expect delays and exercise caution as fines are doubled in the reduced-speed construction zone.
💰 Trivia: Guess the Original Balloon Entry Fee!
What started as a friendly race among a small group of enthusiasts in Black Forest back in 1976 has transformed into the spectacular Colorado Springs Labor Day Lift Off! 🎈 Organized by Dewey Reinhard, this inaugural event featured a unique entry fee and drew around 100 spectators. Today, it has blossomed into a vibrant festival held over Labor Day weekend at Memorial Park, showcasing nearly 100 colorful balloons and captivating thousands of attendees. 🎉
❔ What was the original entry fee for participants in the first balloon event in Black Forest in 1976? |

🚔 It Happened Again—Public Help Urgently Needed!
Early Monday morning, a stolen Kia was driven into the side of First Cash Pawn on Chelton, causing $30,000 in damage. Although some items were stolen, no high-value goods or firearms were taken. This incident is part of a broader trend in Colorado Springs, where nearly three dozen businesses have been targeted in similar smash-and-grab crimes in 2024. The crimes, which often involve stolen Kias or Hyundais and occur in the early morning, have escalated since May. Authorities are asking for the public’s help in solving these cases. Anyone with information on this or any of the other smash-and-grabs in the city should contact the CSPD at 719-444-7000 or Crime Stoppers at 719-634-STOP.
