⚠️ Fillmore Traffic Alert - Starts today!

Fillmore Traffic

Courtesy: City of Colorado Springs

Starting today, traffic on Fillmore will shift to allow for continued bridge maintenance. Westbound lanes will be reduced to one lane between Mark Dabling and I-25, while eastbound traffic will have two lanes open. Drivers won’t be able to make left turns from eastbound Fillmore onto Mark Dabling or from westbound Fillmore onto Steel Drive. So buckle up and pack your patience if you have to take this route as the work, which includes waterproofing, asphalt overlay, and bridge deck repairs, is expected to last until the end of 2024.

🥶 First Freeze On Hold: Will It Arrive Soon?

KOAA Freeze

The beginning of October often marks the first freeze in Colorado Springs, but this year Mother Nature has a different approach. After multiple record-breaking high temps, there's more unseasonably warm weather this week. Meteorologists differentiate between frost, which affects sensitive plants when temperatures drop to the mid-30s, and a freeze, which begins at 32 degrees. A hard freeze, below 28 degrees, is what truly signals the end of the growing season, affecting everything from plants to sprinkler systems. There’s a potential many parts of Colorado Springs won’t see the freeze until possibly mid-October. 🤷‍♀️ We’ll have to keep an eye on the weather…Full Story

🩸 Type O Blood Crisis—Can You Help?

Blood Drive

Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) is the first in the state to carry type O whole blood for emergency transfusions in the field, a program that has already saved several lives. Launched in May 2024 and supported by UCHealth, the initiative allows paramedics to administer blood on-site, providing critical care to patients before they reach the hospital. However, the supply of type O blood, which is universally compatible, has dropped to an 18-month low. To address the shortage, CSFD hosted a blood drive yesterday in partnership with Vitalant. While the drive aimed to replenish the local blood supply, the need for donations continues, and community members are encouraged to find a location nearby and contribute. Vitalant notes that 600 units of blood are needed daily to meet hospital demands across Colorado.

📚Trivia: Black Forest Schoolhouse That United a Community

Black Forest Old Log School in the mid-1920s

Step back in time…to the early 1920s, as the Black Forest area transformed from a logging hub to a budding community, a small log schoolhouse became the beating heart of the settlement. Built by the hands of determined pioneers, this humble structure served as more than just a school - it was a symbol of civilization in the wilderness. From its walls echoed not only the lessons of the day but also the laughter of community dances, the hymns of Sunday services, and even the heated debates of political gatherings.

However, it was during the Great Depression that this one-room school displayed remarkable resilience. As local families struggled, a hot lunch program using government surplus provided meals. But it was the kind gesture of a generous Broadmoor lady that brought a special bright spot - for ten years during those harsh winters, she personally furnished an orange each week for every child at the Black Forest School. *Source

👩‍🦱 Why was the weekly donated orange considered such a meaningful treat for the Black Forest schoolchildren during the Depression?
