🏛 150 Years of Innovation at Colorado College
Wow, another legacy milestone! This year, Colorado College celebrates its 150th anniversary, reflecting on its long-standing commitment to academic excellence, inclusivity, and sustainability. Founded in 1874 with an open-door policy for all races and genders, CC has maintained its progressive values through its innovative block plan and environmental initiatives. The Colorado Pledge ensures affordable education for low- and middle-income students, while the college’s dedication to historic preservation and partnerships like the Fine Arts Center alliance continues to benefit the broader community.
As part of the sesquicentennial celebration, CC will host a 150th Extravaganza on November 2 during Homecoming Weekend. The event will feature live music, casino games, and a drone show, offering a lively way for the community to celebrate the college’s remarkable history and look forward to its future.
🏗️ Hunt Family Housing Project Begins
With construction now underway, the Hunt Family Housing Project aims to provide 24 apartments to families experiencing homelessness in Colorado Springs. These units will serve as temporary homes for up to two years, offering families a secure environment to rebuild their lives. The project is set to be completed by summer 2025.
To ensure the long-term success of the project, Catholic Charities has introduced the New Beginnings campaign, seeking community support to cover operational expenses. Donations can be made by sponsoring a family’s apartment for a month, six months, or a full year. Contributions are tax-deductible and eligible for the 25% Homeless Contribution Tax Credit, and donors will be honored through an art installation at the building, with the option for anonymity.
🚶♀️ New Board Aims to Save Lives in COS
Colorado Department of Law awarded TESSA a $45,000 grant to fund the establishment of a domestic violence fatality review board in El Paso County. This initiative comes at a crucial time, as the number of domestic violence deaths in the state reached a record high in 2022, with 94 deaths reported.
The new board will collaborate with law enforcement and judicial officials to examine fatal domestic violence cases and identify systemic gaps. The goal is to enhance victim services, improve community safety, and reduce the occurrence of these tragedies. Findings from the local board will contribute to statewide efforts in preventing domestic violence fatalities. If you or someone you know is in an abusive relationship, you can call TESSA's confidential safe line at (719)633-3819. Full Story
