📋 Community Input Wanted for Federal Grants

5-year plan for federal grants for Colorado Springs

The City of Colorado Springs is seeking community input on its draft plan for federal grant spending from 2025 to 2029. These HUD grants aim to support affordable housing, tackle homelessness, assist local nonprofits, and improve neighborhood infrastructure for residents in low- and moderate-income areas.

Public feedback is welcome through Jan. 27, and there are two hearings scheduled for residents to participate directly. The first hearing is Jan 7 from 1–2pm at the City Administration Building, with a virtual attendance option available. A second hearing in Spanish is on Jan 16 from 6:30–7:30pm at Silver Key.

Visit ColoradoSprings.gov/2025AnnualActionPlan to view the draft plan, complete the survey, and find additional details about the hearings. Don’t miss this opportunity to help shape the city’s future!

🚀 Space Force Bases Tighten Security

Peterson and Schriever Space Force Bases

In response to recent national security incidents, the Trusted Traveler program at Peterson and Schriever Space Force Bases, along with Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Station, has been indefinitely suspended. This precautionary measure ensures the safety of all personnel, despite no known direct threats to the bases.

The change means all visitors must obtain a base pass, regardless of whether they’re accompanied by a military ID holder. Official visitors, such as government contractors, will need coordination with their host organization, while unofficial visitors must request passes through the Visitor Control Center or preregister online via the DBIDS Visitor Enrollment System. Full details on these updated procedures are available on the base websites.

🚧 Black Forest Road Upgrade Complete

Black Forest Road widening

After two years of work, including some delays caused by heavy summer rain, the Black Forest Road widening project has reached its conclusion. The $32 million investment transformed the road into a more efficient four-lane thoroughfare from Woodmen to just north of Research Parkway.

In addition to widening the road, the project introduced new sidewalks for pedestrian safety and upgraded drainage systems to handle water flow more effectively. The completed project promises smoother travel and enhanced safety for all who use this important route. Full Story

The Crags Trail

The Crags Trail is a peaceful retreat perfect for a winter hike up the Pass. This moderate trail begins near Fourmile Creek and weaves through dense forests and open meadows, offering hikers views of towering cliffs and the rugged western side of Pikes Peak. At the trail's end, a rocky outcrop rewards hikers with sweeping vistas of the Rampart Range, Catamount Reservoirs, and beyond.
