Spring Gardening Tips

As spring settles in, it’s tempting to start planting, but experts recommend waiting until after Mother’s Day when the soil is consistently warm. In the meantime, gardeners can prep by watering, pruning, and adding compost.

Planning for Colorado’s tricky growing conditions—like hail and wildlife—is key to a successful season. And for something new, a glow-in-the-dark petunia called “petunia firefly” is set to arrive at local garden centers soon, offering a unique twist for this year’s gardens. Full Story

🥖 TRIVIA: The Hidden Treasure Of The Gold Rush Era

Hill Side Mine – Cripple Creek, Colorado ca. 1893

Hill Side Mine – Cripple Creek, Colorado ca. 1893

Did you know that sourdough bread was a lifeline for miners in 1893 during the gold rush in Colorado and beyond? In the rugged mining camps of the late 19th century, sourdough starters were treasured possessions, essential for survival in harsh conditions.

What surprising use did miners find for sourdough starters beyond baking bread?

Miners relied on sourdough because it required only flour, water, and time—ingredients readily available even in remote areas. Starters were so valuable that they were often kept warm by being carried close to the body to prevent freezing in cold mountain nights.

In fact, miners in Cripple Creek and other gold rush towns were known to fiercely protect their starters, sometimes even at gunpoint! The term "sourdough" became a nickname for veteran miners, symbolizing their resilience and resourcefulness.

Answer: There have been reports that miners used their sourdough starters as collateral for loans, underscoring just how vital these fermented mixtures were to their livelihood and survival. Source Source2
