🏕️ How Deputies Protected Local Lands

illegal homeless encampment near the Air Force Academy

Last week, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, alongside USAFA and El Paso County Planning and Development, removed an illegal homeless encampment near the Air Force Academy. 👮‍♂️ TRIVIA: Where Did the Springs Begin Its Journey to a Modern Police Force?

Did you know Colorado Springs started with just one man keeping the peace? In 1872, the town’s trustees hired Smith C. “S.C.” Foote as the city’s lone law officer. He worked out of rented quarters at 122 East Huerfano St (today’s Colorado Ave), patrolling dirt streets lined with new businesses and fresh arrivals chasing opportunity.

In what year did Colorado Springs officially replace the Marshal’s Office with a Police Department? 🚓

By 1875, the city built a new hall at 118 South Nevada Ave, giving the marshal’s office a permanent home. As the population grew, so did the challenges—rowdy saloons, disputes over land, and the occasional outlaw passing through. By 1900, the force had grown to 19 officers, and on April 15, 1901, Vincent King became Colorado Springs’ first official Chief of Police.

That day marked the end of the frontier-style marshal era and the beginning of a modern police department—a turning point in how the city kept order as it stepped into the 20th century.
