🔥 Repeat Arson Arrest in the Springs

A small fire on the east side of Colorado Springs (Wooten Rd and Geiger Blvd), led to the arrest of Brandon Hugney on Sunday—his second arrest for arson in less than 30 days. Hugney was previously arrested in July for a grass fire and is also suspected in several other fires dating back to December 2024. He remains in the El Paso County jail on $10,000 bond while police continue their investigation. Full Story

🏕️ How Deputies Protected Local Lands

Last week, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, alongside USAFA and El Paso County Planning and Development, removed an illegal homeless encampment near the Air Force Academy. The camp, found during routine patrol, had caused environmental damage. Three people were cited for trespassing days earlier and offered homelessness assistance resources. Authorities plan to continue monitoring the area to protect the land and prevent future illegal camps. Full Story

🚀 62 Million Miles Later… She’s Home

Local pride is soaring as Woodland Park’s Nichole Ayers returns from her first spaceflight, piloting NASA’s SpaceX Crew-10 mission to the International Space Station. A graduate of both Woodland Park High School and the US Air Force Academy, Ayers’ safe splashdown on Aug 9 marks a milestone for her career — and a moment of celebration for her hometown and the entire Pikes Peak region. 👮‍♂️ TRIVIA: Where Did the Springs Begin Its Journey to a Modern Police Force?
Did you know Colorado Springs started with just one man keeping the peace? In 1872, the town’s trustees hired Smith C. “S.C.” Foote as the city’s lone law officer. He worked out of rented quarters at 122 East Huerfano St (today’s Colorado Ave), patrolling dirt streets lined with new businesses and fresh arrivals chasing opportunity.

In what year did Colorado Springs officially replace the Marshal’s Office with a Police Department? 🚓
By 1875, the city built a new hall at 118 South Nevada Ave, giving the marshal’s office a permanent home. As the population grew, so did the challenges—rowdy saloons, disputes over land, and the occasional outlaw passing through. By 1900, the force had grown to 19 officers, and on April 15, 1901, Vincent King became Colorado Springs’ first official Chief of Police.

That day marked the end of the frontier-style marshal era and the beginning of a modern police department—a turning point in how the city kept order as it stepped into the 20th century.
