🎖️ Free For Veterans Today

Colorado Springs is coming together this Veterans Day with heartfelt gestures of gratitude for those who’ve served. A ceremony at Memorial Park will begin at 10:30am, where wreaths will be placed in honor of local veterans. Pikes Peak State College’s Rampart Range Campus will host veteran speakers from 1-3pm., offering reflections and stories of service. Over at the ANA Money Museum, veterans and one guest can view the special Purple Heart exhibit for free with military ID.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is offering free entry to all state parks today for veterans, active-duty military, and National Guard members. No special permit is required—just show proof of service at the gate.
And across the city, local restaurants—from Village Inn and Denny’s to Bubba’s 33 and Texas Roadhouse—are offering free meals and vouchers to veterans as a small way to say “thank you.” It's a full day of remembrance, reflection, and appreciation. Full Story

🚧 Two Big Projects, Detours Ahead

Starting this week, drivers in Colorado Springs will notice two new street closures tied to bridge work.
Costilla St, east of Wahsatch near downtown, will be closed through Jan as crews begin dismantling a 70-year-old railroad bridge that once supported our streetcar system. Though long inactive, the bridge has become a safety concern and will be carefully removed.
Las Vegas St near Janitell Rd is also closing temporarily while construction crews continue work on the new Circle Drive bridges, with that project nearing completion. Detours via Pikes Peak and Fountain Blvd are in place, and access to nearby businesses and Shooks Run Trail will remain open. Full Story

⚰️ Trivia Time: Veterans’ History Beneath Colorado Springs’ Soil

Did you know that Evergreen Cemetery (1005 Hancock Expwy) stands as one of Colorado Springs’ oldest and most storied landmarks, serving the city since its founding by General William Jackson Palmer in 1871. Originally called Mount Washington or Mountain Home Cemetery, the site was officially deeded to the city by Palmer in 1875, renamed Evergreen in 1877, and has expanded from an initial ten acres to more than 220 acres today. This growth mirrors the city itself as pioneers, entrepreneurs, artists, philanthropists, and everyday residents found rest beneath the shadow of Pikes Peak.
When was Evergreen Cemetery officially listed in the National Register of Historic Places—securing its protected status as a treasured local landmark?
What makes Evergreen especially meaningful on Veterans Day is its deep ties to military history. The cemetery is home to the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers, Civil War veterans, and those who served in virtually every conflict since. Distinct rows of markers honor veterans from World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and more. Organizations like the Grand Army of the Republic and Sons of the American Revolution helped establish monuments and host annual ceremonies—a tradition the city continues to this day, with special events honoring past and present members of the armed forces.
For Colorado Springs residents, Evergreen Cemetery is more than a resting place. It’s a living record of sacrifice, resilience, and civic pride. Every Veterans Day, walking its peaceful grounds connects us to the legacies that built our community—and reminds us to honor those who served.
