😟 75K Coloradans Could Lose Coverage

Many Colorado Springs families are now in limbo after the shutdown ended without a deal to extend federal tax credits for Affordable Care Act plans—credits that more than 225,000 Coloradans rely on to afford monthly premiums. Without action from Congress, the Colorado Division of Insurance says average costs could double next year, and as many as 75,000 people may lose coverage altogether.
Families already using ACA plans, say even moderate increases strain their budgets, while local doctors worry about more patients delaying care or skipping medications. State officials, including the Insurance Commissioner, continue urging Congress to extend the tax credits immediately, warning that time is running out before prices rise in January. Full Story

🍳 Restaurant Report: Hits & Misses

This week’s local restaurant inspections had some ups and downs. OLA Juice & Coffee Bar on Garden of the Gods Rd struggled, citing 9 violations that included a fruit fly issue, missing sanitizer, and missed handwashing—but they’ve since passed re-inspection and report taking immediate steps to fix the problems.
🚫 These restaurants need to clean up their act. Failed, re-inspection needed
Aiki Sushi & Ramen (4359 Integrity Center Point)
Failed two inspections in a row
Unsafe food temps, poor storage of raw and cooked foods
Missing handwashing access, unsanitary thawing, unprotected food display
Re-inspection scheduled and multiple issues pending correction
🥇 Top Scores! On the bright side, several local favorites earned high marks, including Zapata Mexican Taco Shop, which came through with a flawless report. But the crown goes to King’s Chef Diner, a downtown institution since the 1950s, known not only for its hearty meals and open kitchen but also for a spotless inspection and strong customer connections.

✅ Other High Scores:
Modern Market (Powers Blvd) – High score
Bird Dog BBQ (Centennial Blvd) – High score
Health inspection results across El Paso County are available online for those wanting to check their favorite spots.
*Note: Most local restaurants take food safety incredibly seriously. In fact, many owners respond to violations swiftly and thoroughly, often making fixes the same day while they wait for reinspection.

🥾 Explore the Pineries Today

Recommended by our friend Heath, founder of Colorado Fan Club, The Pineries Open Space is a favorite for good reason. Located just northeast of town, this 8-mile loop near Black Forest is ideal for hiking or biking with gorgeous views of Pikes Peak. Dogs are welcome on a leash, and there's a fascinating backstory: the land was once part of a sprawling ranch started in 1958 by the Farrar family, who transitioned from cattle to forestry.
After decades of conservation efforts and recovery from the 2013 Black Forest Fire, the open space officially opened to the public in 2020. Today, thanks to ongoing stewardship and two conservation easements, we all get to enjoy this scenic slice of Colorado.
Location: 13201 Vollmer Road, Colorado Springs, CO 80908
