Myth: Pet insurance doesn’t cover everything

Many pet owners worry that insurance won’t cover everything, especially routine care or pre-existing conditions. While that’s true in many cases, most insurers now offer wellness add-ons for preventive care like vaccines, dental cleanings, and check-ups, giving you more complete coverage. View Money’s pet insurance list to find plans for as low as $10 a month.

The Pikes Peak Region is now home to its very own Honor Bell—a thousand-pound bronze bell forged with artifacts from 12 Colorado service members. Meant to be tolled at veterans’ services and memorials, this bell brings closure and reflection to military families and the community alike.

The dream of the late Louis Olivera, who founded the Honor Bell Foundation, helped make this possible, and with the support of Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center and others, the bell is now ready to serve our region. A dedication ceremony will be held at Mt Carmel today at 2pm, and the bell will primarily reside at the Pikes Peak National Cemetery during the week. Full Story

🧻 Public Restrooms: Top Priority!

The future of downtown Colorado Springs is taking shape, and community voices are playing a big role. City Council recently got a preview of a new Master Plan that prioritizes small businesses, safe and walkable streets, arts and culture—and yes, even public bathrooms.

With housing top of mind, the plan also calls for more variety in housing options to meet the needs of young professionals, families, seniors, and those experiencing homelessness. As the city looks at how tall buildings can be and where, there’s still time for residents to share feedback before the plan is finalized early next year. Full Story

🚪 Trivia Time: History at 24 West Huerfano

Did you know many of the beautiful iron fences, gates, and even old lamp posts in Colorado Springs are more than just vintage charm? They are handmade signatures of the Hassell Iron Works, a family-run business whose grit and creativity shaped our city’s streetscapes from the 1880s through the 1940s.

The story starts with William W. Hassell, who arrived in the Springs seeking a cure for tuberculosis and discovered a new lease on life. After homesteading near Florissant, he set up shop at 24 West Huerfano (today’s Colorado Ave)—right where you might now grab coffee or dinner downtown. His success let him expand a full foundry at 500 S 25th St in Colorado City (now part of the Westside) and, after disastrous fires, to 500 S Sierra Madre, with offices on Cimarron. These addresses, now bustling with different businesses, once rang with the clatter of ironwork destined for stately homes, bustling railroads, and a city on the rise.

Which vintage Colorado Springs landmark, still in use today, features original “double daisy” Hassell ironwork fencing along its property line?

When the grand Antlers Hotel burned in 1898, it wasn’t just a tragedy—it was a turning point. Hassell’s provided key ironwork when the hotel was rebuilt, marking the resilience of a community that refused to be beaten by disaster. The family’s “double daisy” fences and iron arches can still be found in Old North End, Manitou, and the Westside, connecting today’s neighborhoods to the ambitious, inventive spirit of their makers.

For Colorado Springs residents, these details are much more than relics. They are living pieces of our everyday landscape—a reminder that the city is built not just on stone and timber, but on the dreams, work, and persistent hope of those who dared to start over.

Answer: The Hassell House at 1422–1424 Wood Ave still displays its original “double daisy” iron fence, a hallmark of the firm’s craftsmanship. *Source
