🐾 Empty Kennels, Full Hearts

The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region is celebrating a rare and heartwarming milestone: all cat kennels at its Colorado Springs location are currently empty after every adoptable cat found a home. On most days, the shelter cares for anywhere from 20 to 50 cats, making a full adoption sweep something that only happens once every couple of years.
While a handful of cats are still available through foster homes, this moment reflects the combined efforts of staff, fosters, and adopters who helped make space, and hearts, open. It’s a quiet but powerful reminder of how much good can happen when a community comes together. Since this happened at Christmas time, my only hope is that they all have loving homes and not just for a cute “under the tree” moment that will be returned when reality sets in. Only time will tell. 🙀

The Colorado Springs Fire Department has rolled out a new interactive Data Dashboard designed to give residents a clearer picture of how emergency calls are handled across the city.
The dashboard features two easy-to-use sections:
One offering a 12-month snapshot of emergency incidents, including common call types, top subcategories, and monthly trends
Another that lets users explore station-level and neighborhood data, such as call volume by time of day and recent activity
With interactive maps and filters, residents can see how local fire station serves each area, reinforcing transparency and helping the community better understand how resources are used to protect lives and property every day.

🔧 What’s Driving Up Auto Repair Prices?

As winter approaches, Colorado Springs drivers may want to budget a little extra for car repairs. Auto shops report that the cost of parts has climbed significantly over the past few years, with tariffs and supply chain disruptions continuing to ripple through the industry. Repairs tied to winter driving, (i.e. brakes, suspension, and batteries) can be especially affected when parts are damaged by ice, snow, or curbs.
While many local repair shops are actively negotiating with suppliers and adjusting operations to protect customers from steep price jumps, fluctuating part costs mean some repairs may still come with higher-than-expected price tags this season. Full Story

🎆 TRIVIA: Who Are The Mysterious “Frozen Five”?
Did you know Colorado Springs’ most dramatic New Year’s Eve tradition began with five friends betting they could light up the whole region from the top of Pikes Peak?
Picture it: December 31, 1922. Before dawn, brothers Fred and Ed Morath shoulder packs stuffed with rockets, flares, and food, 175 pounds in all, and meet trail wizard Fred Barr (yes, the namesake of the Barr Trail today), plus climbers Willis Magee and Harry Standley in Manitou Springs. The Cog Railway is closed for winter, so they follow the snow-buried tracks on foot, breaking trail in large drifts. By the halfway house, the temperature hovers below zero; higher up, the wind howls so fiercely it nearly blows Willis off a cliff.

Eight hours after leaving town, the “Frozen Five” (as they were affectionately called) finally stagger into the Summit House, faces burned by wind and ice, convinced that without that shelter they might not have survived. Below them, Colorado Springs buzzes with anticipation, because newspaper headlines have promised a midnight fireworks show “like nothing the region has ever seen.”
At 9pm, the men step back into the storm, light a green rocket to signal “we’re still alive,” and set a flare glowing against the black sky. Downtown, the city electrician dims the lights for 30 seconds so residents can search the summit for that tiny spark.
Just before midnight, the blizzard roars back, but the climbers launch their rockets anyway, then ignite a semi-circle of flares across the east face of the peak. For a few minutes, in breaks between the clouds, residents below glimpse Pikes Peak crowned in fire, a new year literally illuminated in light over their town.
In what year did the AdAmAn Club first invite and induct a woman as a full climbing member?
In March 1923, those same men gather again and make a pact: they will do it every year, adding just one new climber at a time, and the AdAmAn (add a man) Club is born. Over a century later, when you look up at the mountain on New Year’s Eve, you are sharing that same moment of hope and awe with generations of Coloradans who once stood in the cold and waited for a flash of light on the summit. Live, Pikes Peak Summit Webcam.
Answer: The AdAmAn Club inducted its first female member, Sue Graham, in 1997, and has added additional women members in the years since.
