π§ Road Work Continues on S Academy

If you use South Academy in the evenings or early mornings, heads up. Through Jan 23, closures run 7pm to 5am, allowing crews to remove old lane markings, install temporary striping, and set concrete barriers ahead of deeper construction.
The work area focuses between Astrozon and Drennen, but the exact closed section rotates by night (including nights covering the Hancock Expressway β Drennen segment). Traffic patterns and detours may shift each evening. If you can, give yourself extra time, slow down near the work zone, and watch for signage.
β οΈ Wildlife Alert in Rockrimmon

A late-night Ring camera moment in Rockrimmonβs Oak Hills neighborhood caught the quiet passage of three mountain lions crossing a driveway near Vindicator Dr and Centennial. While startling to see, sightings like this arenβt unusual along the Front Range. Local wildlife officials remind residents that awareness and a few simple habits go a long way in peacefully sharing space with these animals.
Simple steps such as bringing pets indoors at night, removing hiding spots in yards, using outdoor lighting, and supervising children near dusk and dawn can significantly reduce risk. Encounters are rare, and most lions avoid people, but knowing how to stay calm, give the animal space, and make yourself look larger if one is spotted helps keep both people and wildlife safe.

π A Night of 80s Fantasy Magic
One of the most imaginative films of the 1980s is coming back to life in Colorado Springs. Released in 1986, Jim Hensonβs Labyrinth wasnβt about flashy CGI or hyper-real effects, it was about imagination, handcrafted puppets, and storytelling that felt bold for its time.
This anniversary concert invites audiences to watch the full film on a giant HD screen while a live band performs the entire score in sync with David Bowieβs unforgettable vocals and Trevor Jonesβ sweeping music. What may look charmingly simple today was groundbreaking then, and thatβs part of what makes this night special on Oct 13 at the Pikes Peak Center. Fans are encouraged to dress up, sing along, and reconnect with the Goblin City magic that defined a generation of movie nights and sleepover rewatches.

π§ TRIVIA: Why Do Endangered Penguins Need Colorado Springs?
Did you know some of the most important penguins for their speciesβ survival live right here in Colorado Springs?
At Cheyenne Mountain Zooβs Waterβs Edge: Africa, you can stand just a few feet from a noisy, splashing colony of African penguins. Kids walk past them at eye level, watching them waddle on the sand and rocket through the water like little torpedoes. These are not coldβweather, Antarctica birds. African penguins live on the coasts of South Africa and Namibia, and they are now endangered as overfishing, oil spills, and warming oceans shrink their food and nesting sites.
What is the name of the South African rescue organization that Cheyenne Mountain Zoo helps support to save African penguin eggs and chicks?
Here is where Colorado Springs comes in. Cheyenne Mountain Zoo uses every penguin encounter to ask a simple question: βWill you help?β Through zoo admission, memberships, and a yearly conservation vote, local visitors raise money that goes straight to a rescue group in South Africa that cares for abandoned penguin eggs and chicks. That group hatches the eggs, handβfeeds the chicks until they are strong, and then releases them back into the ocean. Hundreds of penguins have gotten a second chance this way, helped in part by people who came up the mountain for a fun day at the zoo.

So today, on Penguin Awareness Day, when you watch those βlittle tuxedosβ barking on the rocks, you are not just entertained. You are looking at a bridge between Colorado Springs and a wild beach half a world away and your visit helps keep that beach full of penguins.
Answer: The zoo supports SANCCOB, the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds. *Source
