🧀 Community Steps Up for the Cold

With single-digit temperatures and snow in the forecast, Hope COS is opening its cold-weather shelter along West Colorado Ave whenever temperatures drop below 20 degrees, offering a safe place to sleep, warm meals, and shuttle rides to the shelter through the weekend. These openings rely heavily on community volunteers and donations each time cold snaps hit.

For households struggling with heating costs, Colorado’s Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP) or call 866-HEAT-HELP They may be able to help with covering part of monthly energy bills for qualifying residents. Additional support, including winter clothing, bedding, home efficiency help, and even snow shoveling, is available by calling 2-1-1, making sure no one has to face the cold alone. Full Story

Older homes, particularly those built before the 1980s, are more vulnerable due to outdated insulation and pipe placement, though even newer homes can have hidden cold spots.

A key step homeowners can take now is locating your main water shutoff, often found near the water heater or where the water line enters the home, so leaks can be stopped quickly if needed. Letting warm air reach pipes by opening cabinet doors and allowing faucets to drip can also help during prolonged cold snaps, making a little preparation now a big stress-saver later. Full Story
