π° Gold Rush Hits the Springs

Gold and silver prices are hitting record highs, and you can feel it right here in Colorado Springs. This week, gold jumped past $5,000 an ounce, sending a steady stream of people into local coin shops, some finally selling jewelry or coins theyβve held onto for years, others buying because the economy just feelsβ¦ uncertain.
At the well known Hallenbeckβs Coin Gallery downtown, lines are out the door as longtime collectors and first-timers alike decide what to do next. When people feel unsure about inflation, global issues, or the value of the dollar, precious metals often feel like a safer place to park money, even if only for peace of mind. Whether folks are cashing in or hedging their bets, one thing is clear: a lot of Colorado Springs residents are paying close attention right now. Full Story
π₯ Now Your Gas Bill May Increase

If you receive natural gas service from Colorado Springs Utilities (CSU), your monthly bill could increase slightly as part of a proposed safety-focused update. The utility is asking to add a bill rider that would fund long-planned pipeline safety work, including replacing older steel gas lines that can corrode over time.
The average household impact is estimated at $7β$10 per month. The proposal goes before the Utilities Board in February, then City Council in April, with any approved changes expected to begin in July 2026. While no one loves higher bills, the goal is to reduce long-term risk and keep the gas system dependable as the city grows, according to CSU. Full Story

π¨ Crime Solving vs. Privacy Fears

Automatic license plate readers used by CSPD have shown their value in urgent situations, including helping reunite a kidnapped toddler with family within hours. The cameras capture license plate numbers and locations to alert officers about stolen vehicles or missing persons. At the same time, some residents and privacy advocates worry about how much data is collected and how easily it could be misused. Hence the DeFlock website that is an open source program to show the locations of these readers.
The technology provider, Flock Safety, says local agencies control their own data and decide what is shared, but critics argue that stronger safeguards are needed. With these concerns growing, state lawmakers are now considering legislation to set clearer rules around how this technology can be used. Full Story

π« TRIVIA: What Secret Legacy Hides On Kiowa Street?

Did you know one of Colorado Springsβ most historic campuses exists because one family refused to let their children be left out of school?
In 1874, Jonathan and Mary Kennedy arrived in the Colorado Territory with five children, three of them Deaf. At a time when deaf children were often sent away or not educated at all, Jonathan stood before the Territorial Assembly and argued that his kids, and others like them, deserved a real school close to home. Lawmakers listened. They passed an act creating a school in the Springs and committed $5,000, a serious sum then, to make it real. General William Jackson Palmer donated 10 acres on Kiowa St for the campus.
School opened that April in a rented downtown house with just seven students, including three Kennedys, but the message was clear: our town was willing to spend its money and give up its land so deaf children could belong. Within two years, a permanent building rose on the donated site, with dorms for students from all over Colorado. Soon blind students were welcomed, and over the next century the hilltop filled with classrooms, dorms, a gym, gardens, bands, and vocational shops. A whole neighborhood was built so deaf, blind, and deafblind kids could learn, play, and grow together at the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind.
Which CSDB alumnus is widely credited with inventing the modern football huddle while playing at Gallaudet University?
On January 16, 2026, this amazing history reached a new milestone. The Colorado Historic Preservation Review Board voted to send CSDBβs campus nomination to Washington, DC, moving it one step closer to being listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This nomination is not just for its beautiful old brick buildings, but for what those buildings have meant to generations of students and families across our state.
When you drive past CSDB today and see students signing on the sidewalks or heading across the bridge over Pikes Peak Ave, you are watching 150+ years of Colorado Springs keeping a promise it made with $5,000, 10 acres, and a very determined father.
Watch video documentaries of the school history from 1974-2022 here.
Answer: Paul Hubbard, who graduated from CSDB in 1889, is credited with inventing the football huddle so Deaf players could discuss plays in sign language without opponents reading their hands. *Source
