El Paso County homeowners are confronting higher property tax bills after a state provision designed to provide temporary relief expired. The increase, which one resident saw spike by nearly 35%, is a delayed effect of soaring home values in recent years. Experts explain that while the change is significant, it brings taxes closer to their unfixed level and future legislation may offer new relief. Full Story

This week’s restaurant inspection report highlights why routine health checks matter. Two restaurants were flagged for issues that could impact food safety (primarily around hygiene, cross-contamination, temperature control, and pest activity) prompting required re-inspections, though none were ordered to close at this time.

One popular restaurant landed in a “mixed” category after previously closing but has since corrected issues and passed.

As always, re-inspections are part of the process, giving restaurants the opportunity to correct issues and demonstrate compliance.

This location remains open for now, but must address specific issues before inspectors return.

🥇 Top Scores! On the brighter side, several local spots passed their inspections with minor violations mostly corrected on site, showing strong compliance and improvement across the board.

*Note: Most local restaurants take food safety incredibly seriously. In fact, many owners respond to violations swiftly and thoroughly, often making fixes the same day while they wait for reinspection.

The Rock Island Trail is one of those low-key secrets that does a lot. Built along a former railroad corridor, this roughly 6-mile paved trail runs east–west alongside Constitution Ave, stretching from Weber to Powers. With its gentle grade and smooth surface, it’s well-suited for walkers, cyclists, and everyday commuters alike.

Along the way, the trail weaves through residential and urban areas, includes a handful of street crossings, and connects directly to the Shooks Run Trail, making it an easy jumping-off point to reach Palmer Park, the Pikes Peak Greenway, and other parts of the city’s growing trail network.
