πŸ₯‡ Olympic Update

Currently, as competition continues in Italy, Norway and Switzerland are tied for the most gold medals so far, while host nation Italy leads in total medals overall. For the U.S., the biggest headline is curling: Americans Korey Dropkin and Cory Thiesse fought their way into the mixed doubles gold medal match after a hard-earned semifinal win, securing at least a silver medal for Team USA.

The U.S. currently sits at two gold medals total, and the upcoming matchup against Sweden gives Americans a chance to climb higher in the standings. While overall rankings often prioritize gold medals over total count, the race remains wide open as more finals are still ahead.

β›Έ TRIVIA: 1930's 24-Day Ice Palace Shocked Colorado Springs

Did you know Colorado Springs once had waiters serving drinks on skates beside 100 tons of ice under Pikes Peak? In the late 1930s, just as America was falling in love with glamorous skating movies and touring ice shows, The Broadmoor’s owners, Spencer Penrose and Charles Tutt Jr., turned a simple riding academy into the Broadmoor Ice Palace in only 24 days. They spent $200,000 to create a 185-by-85-foot rink, warmed the edges with steam pipes, and set up tables where guests watched the ice while waiters glided by with drinks and snacks.

Almost immediately, the Broadmoor Skating Club formed, first under the name Pikes Peak Figure Skating Club. Skaters had to prove themselves with precise edges and turns just to join.

Which famous Broadmoor Skating Club standout went on to win Olympic gold in women’s figure skating at the 1968 Winter Games in Grenoble, France?

That first year, they put on ice shows for hotel conventions, launched a summer revue where the ice was painted like a Navajo rug with tepees and real bonfires, and staged a holiday spectacular. Their shows quickly earned a reputation as the most β€œprofessional” amateur productions anywhere, and Thayer Tutt’s passion for international sports helped attract world-class coaches and skaters to train right here in our local community.
