šŸ¦’ New Leader for Our Beloved Zoo

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo has named a new president and CEO, and Dave Ruhl officially steps in on June 12, 2026. He replaces Bob Chastain, who led the zoo for two decades. Big shoes to fill, but the board is confident in the choice.

Here’s why:

  • šŸ¦’ Led the design and build of the new International Center for the Care and Conservation of Giraffe, opening summer 2026

  • šŸŒ Oversaw the launch of Water’s Edge: Africa

  • šŸ‘„ Built a people-first culture with staff programs like intramural kickball and soccer

  • šŸ¤ Active in Colorado Springs Chamber & EDC and Leadership Pikes Peak

  • šŸ›”ļø Brought safety and conservation wins from roles at Toledo Zoo and Palm Beach Zoo

Ruhl joined CMZoo in April 2020, starting as vice president of operations before being promoted to executive vice president. Now, he’s moving into the top role. Board Chair Ann Naughton highlighted his leadership and strong reputation in the zoo community as key reasons for the decision.

His style is simple: support, trust, and teamwork. Not slogans. Action.

šŸ¦ 70 Years Later… BJ’s Expands

One of Colorado Springs’ most beloved classic drive-ins is expanding. BJ’s Velvet Freez is opening a second location, bringing even more soft-serve swirls, legendary shakes and old-school favorites to our community.

Owner Stan Kelley confirmed the new shop is set to open in March at 2900 E Platte, right next to Fargo’s Pizza. While an exact opening date hasn’t been finalized, the countdown has officially begun.

BJ’s first opened in 1954 and has been serving up hamburgers, sundaes and malts to generations of locals ever since. After celebrating 70 years in 2024, the iconic spot is proving it’s still a favorite, and now it’s getting bigger.
