🚦 County Tackles Risky Roads

El Paso County’s Department of Public Works is advancing a data-driven Intersection Safety Improvement Program that prioritizes high-risk intersections based on crash history and field reviews. Approximately 25 intersections have already received safety upgrades such as improved signage, pavement markings, crosswalks, and stop bars, with additional construction projects enhancing lighting and visibility at priority locations.

National research indicates that these types of improvements can reduce fatal and injury crashes by up to 27% while delivering strong returns on investment. The County is also developing a public dashboard to increase transparency around roadway safety and pavement projects planned for 2026 as part of its broader commitment to reducing risk across the transportation system.

⚠️ Filing Taxes Too Soon Could Cost You

A local Colorado Springs tax professional is urging residents not to rush their tax filings this year, citing major new deductions and confusing reporting changes that could lead to errors. Key updates include a substantial new deduction for seniors and altered rules for tip income and energy credits, all of which require careful documentation. The expert warns that amending a filed return can trigger a processing delay of over 20 weeks, making accuracy more important than speed. Full Story

🦷 TRIVIA: What Did a Local Dentist Discover That Shocked the Nation?

Did you know that Colorado Springs played a pivotal role in one of the most important public health discoveries of the 20th century?

When Dr. Frederick McKay arrived here in 1901, he was puzzled by the unusual brown stains on children’s teeth—a condition soon called “Colorado Brown Stain.” Determined to find the cause, McKay and fellow dentists investigated the city’s water and geology, uncovering naturally high fluoride levels.

Before fluoride was added to water nationwide, what major issue did the U.S. military face with young recruits during World War II?

While the staining was a cosmetic concern, McKay noticed these children had significantly fewer cavities than others. This surprising link sparked research that eventually led to the widespread addition of fluoride to public water supplies, revolutionizing dental health across the nation and now a controversial topic. *Source
